Top 20 MATRICULATION lists from high school web sites

This list is based upon the statistic I started calculating on each Top 20 listing for % of Top 20 matriculants going to the defined colleges: Ivies, Stanford, MIT, & SWAP's (Swarthmore, Williams, Amherst & Pomona). I do NOT intend to mean that placement at these schools is the only or right measure of placement quality.......its what I initially picked & I'm sticking with it.

I counted the number of matriculating students heading to the defined colleges out of the Top 20 lists, and divided that number by the estimated class size * number of years reported in the matriculation list. SO, keep in mind that this calculation does NOT represent ALL of the matriculants to those colleges, just those represented in the Top 20. If I had the data & ran the totals for all Ivy, S+M + SWAP matriculants, the percentages would be HIGHER than what is presented below. So, the %'s below are likely under-representations of the true percentage of all matriculants going to these colleges. The WSJ numbers I believe are more analagous to counting all matriculants, but they are looking at a different set of schools.

Remember also that I do NOT have data for some of the schools that WSJ reported, like St Albans, Sidwell Friends, and more. Although our college lists are not exactly compatible, I find it very odd that some very high-scoring schools on my list (e.g., those with >20% Ivy, S+M, and SWAP in the Top 20) cannot be found on the WSJ list, and their lower cut-off is 3% of their colleges. I'll be looking at that some more (I may try to replicate their college-base, but it will be for different years.....should theoretically be close though). Also, I'll do some more sorting later with the list below on demographics....that may prove interesting.

footnote.......WSJ limited their study to those schools producing >20 matriculants to their defined colleges and class sizes >50......I believe this cut out several on my list like Brearley w/ class size of 44 and several others w/ large enough class size but fewer than 20 (per year) heading to the defined colleges.

PC-
You and WSJ are now very close! And, as suspected, the variation is centered on the NY schools (because Columbia was not included in the WSJ article).

I have a theory that I won't ask you to test (unless you have the spare time :) )

I suspect the college decisions from these respective feeder high schools are very much focused on one particular selective college, as opposed to a well-rounded spread amongst several colleges. I bet the term "feeder" is more appropriate than we realize - as one HS will "feed" one college.

I don't know if this is an indication that certain colleges are upholding the tradition of accepting from certain high schools, or whether the results are more related to culture of the HS (with students having a culture of applying to one specific college).

Either way, I bet you'll find trending to indicate that students from these respective high schools are being channeled into a specific top college, not the Ivy League in general.

momsdream-- Have a look at some of the previously posted Top 20 lists. Based upon those lists, focus on fewer selective colleges seems to occur most with HS's that place fewer matriculants in selective colleges. That is, the Deerfields tend to have a pretty even spread across most Ivies, but less-elite HS's may focus on just a few Ivies.

Here are some examples (Top 20 quality index from post 281 above):

Deerfield (38%): matriculants to all Ivies, highest is Brown (51 matriculants on Top 20 list) and lowest is Dartmouth (19)
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1234043&postcount=11%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1234043&postcount=11</a></p>

Collegiate (57%): matriculants to all Ivies, highest to Harvard (26) and lowest to Dartmouth (4)
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1234036&postcount=9%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1234036&postcount=9</a></p>

Gilman (20%): matriculants to 7 Ivies in Top 20, highest to Cornell (19) & lowest to Dartmouth (7)
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1234074&postcount=18%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1234074&postcount=18</a></p>

Choate (20%): matriculants to 5 Ivies in Top 20, highest is Penn (44) and lowest is Columbia (25)
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1234027&postcount=7%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1234027&postcount=7</a></p>

Moses Brown (12%): matriculants to 5 Ivies in Top 20, highest is Brown (18) and lowest is Yale (4)
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1262554&postcount=203%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1262554&postcount=203</a></p>

Shady Side (7%): matriculants to 4 Ivies in Top 20, highest is Penn (15), lowest Harvard (6)
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1258260&postcount=184%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1258260&postcount=184</a></p>

Cinci Country Day (4%): matriculants to 1 Ivy in Top 20, Harvard
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1234031&postcount=8%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=1234031&postcount=8</a></p>

Pretty clear pattern. General conclusion is that there is an inverse relationship between a HS's focus on feeding to a particular college and the HS's overall placement selectivity.

Here are some other statistics to ponder sorting the 120 schools and their Top 20 quality indexes presented in post 281,

A. Sorting by region shows the following averages:

Avg Top 20 quality index/Avg class size/N (number of HS’s)
CENTRAL: 5% / 102 /11
MIDATL: 17% / 124 / 45
NEW ENG: 13% / 116 / 24
SOUTH: 4% / 131 / 14
STHWEST: 11% / 113 / 5
WEST: 11% / 119 / 17
INTERNAT: 6% / 144 / 4

Note that MidAtlantic includes states from NY to Va.

No startling results here IMO. However, in looking at the New England Top 20 quality index list of 24, there appears to be a pronounced bifurcation of the data; that is, relatively few HS’s with quality indexes between 5% and 20%, whereas all other regions show a fairly even spread through their ranges.

Here are the New England data:

126-150: 10% / 14
151-200: 18% / 10

This is interesting to me……seems that schools with class sizes of 101 to 125 and 151 to 200 apparently have a much better placement quality. (Of course this is not exactly a random sample.)

Pops...you are the greatest entertainer.

Can you re-sort to present the top hs in each region?

New York is not in the New England region?

Here's a few more questions:

Why do the top colleges and universities LOVE New York City PRIVATE SCHOOL students so much? 7 of the top 10 feeder schools are private schools in NYC.

Where are Illinois and Chicago? Illionis state schools are not California state schools. why don't the top colleges and universities like Chicago students?

Another extraction: Top public in-state universities ARE getting the cream of the crop; ie CA, TX, NC, VA, WA, FLA, MI, PA--Illinois too apparently. Manhattanites clearly avoid their state universities.

Another shocker: Clayotn High School in saint Louis is the third highest feeder school in the nation--after Stuyvesant and TJ? Wow.

Thanks for the info. Did you do The Fieldston School of Riverdale? That's another NYC private school.

Wow!

Can anyone verify the statistics that Stuyvesant HS only sent 7 kids to Harvard in 2005? Because, according to the wall street journal, they sent 21 kids in 2003 - that's a big decline. It's probably the screwy NYC public school system that is screwing them over. oh well...

Some of the variation in Stuy admits at Harvard from year to year may be essentially random variation in the class's level of ability at the top end--or preference among college possibilities. I "know" online a few of those Stuy grads, and it may be that the bumper crop year was just an unusually good year in the Stuy class in which an unusually high number of the top students preferred to go to Harvard rather than somewhere else.

Cheers-- here you go:

[And BTW, I included NY & NJ in MidAtl because thats' how Williams (the one college I found which grouped such data by region & state) apparently does it.]

Yes, the NYC schools are quite impressive. Most are relatively small & seem to specialize in feeding to the elites. I'll defer to someone else who knows 1st hand why they fair so well, but I'd guess, beside outstanding student selectivity & academics, that their established connections to the Ivies etc are very very solid & time-tested, via not only the HS's but also parents, alumni, etc.

Illinois schools?.....I looked, but I couldn't find many Chicago-area HS's that reported matriculation lists. Therefore, they are under-represented.

"Another shocker: Clayotn High School in saint Louis is the third highest feeder school in the nation--after Stuyvesant and TJ? Wow."......well, thats true for the publics that are reported on this thread, but there are only a handful of publics reported, so I wouldn't jump to that general conclusion with so little data.

& no, I didn't look for Fieldstone. There are plenty NOT covered on this thread, so please remember that the analyses & rankings are best viewed as relative comparisons within the set of HS's reported, not as absolutes amongst all HS's.

More on Catholics etc when I get a chance....perhaps next weekend.

Similar to post 254 looking at HS's that Feed sizable amounts of their graduates to the Ivies etc, this post deals with HS's that Feed Catholic & Jesuit colleges.

METHODS....... I counted the number of matriculants per year to the Catholic & Jesuit colleges by HS, then assigned points to the HS based upon number of matriculants to each Cath/Jes college over a minimum threshold. As noted on post 254, this system is totally arbitrary, concocted my me, but it is helpful I think in discerning which HS's are the real players here (at least out of the 120 or so included on this thread).

So here's how I assigned points:
1 point for 3 or more matriculants to a single Cath/Jes college
1 additional point for 9 or more matriculants (super feeder to that college)

I will lay-out the colleges associated with these HS's and feeder lists sorted by college in a near-future posts.

Some observations....Stuy, with its large size, is #1, with several Cath/Jes HS's (or at least they appear Cath/Jes by their names) ranking highly. Delbarton, a strong elite feeder, also feeds strong numbers of matriculants to the Cath & Jesuit colleges. Many HS's that feed the elites (Ivies, S+M, SWAP) also appear to feed Boston College and Georgetown, but not every elite feeder feeds Cath/Jes colleges also.

is a public HS
** is a super feeder for the astericked college(9 or more matriculants to the college per year)

Georgetown & Boston C feeders follow a similar pattern to the elites, perhaps a bit more Cath/Jesuit HS influence. Major local influence with Villanova & Loyola Marymount (& some other single HS feeders).

Yes, it is. It is also (as the name implies) heavily focused on math and science, which partially explains the gigantic feed to UIUC...if you want to study engineering or computer science, which many IMSA grads do, UIUC offers Illinois residents a world-class program at a ridiculously low price compared to CMU, MIT, etc. The IMSA grads who look to the Ivies tend to come from the minority of the class that wants to move into the humanities etc.

Here, one can clearly see that UVa draws from the widest array of high schools outside of Virginia, followed by Michigan & UNC. Although I did not sort along regional lines for this analysis, note that UNC (& Georgia also for that matter) predominately draws from in-region HS’s, whereas Michigan has a draw from all regions. Another interesting tidbit is that U Washington’s out-of-state feeders are Asian-area international high schools.

[More slicing & dicing on Publics, and other top universities in future posts. I’m running out of steam though, so not much more I’m planning on squeezing out of my mega-tabbed spreadsheet.]

Taipei American HS, while not high in the elite feeder ranks, places many of their graduates in high-ranking public universities. Many of the other private HS's on this list are also elite feeders, routinely sending some matriculants to UVa & Michigan. Of note, St Johnsbury (Vermont) has a very unique top 20 public feeder profile, sending graduates to UNC & University of Washington.

Its possible the students attending the Singapore and Taipei schools are in fact Americans whose parents are in the military or work for American businesses and are considered residents of the states where they are going to college.

What is the point of this post? Am I missing something?
