Wow. Three public schools in the top 100.

Some of these schools have amazing records at HYP, but even at the tippy top there are no guaratees. Given the size of its class, Brearley's 21% probably means 2-3 kids per school per year, average. And there is a very sharp levelling off. The difference between #28 and #67 is less than 3%, or 1-2 kids per year, and the difference between #67 and #100 is half of that. I would bet the rankings would shift around a lot depending on which years you took in your rolling average. One good/bad year could shift a school 20-30 places.

I'll bet Rox Latin has a lot of Harvard faculty kids. Ditto (with appropriate name changes) Hopkins School and Princeton Day.

JHS-- on your last point, we got into the proximity issue several thread pages back....looked at connections from Ithaca HS to Cornell, Mt Gretlock HS to Williams, Lebenon HS to Dartmouth, and Princeton HS to Princeton (there may be others, but its been a while) Bottom line as you surmised is that there is a very big draw from local HS's to the nearby elite institutions.

This relationship is particularly evident in Ithaca HS's data, which is unique in that the database is broken down by student (& there are many), with class standing & standardized test scores, and their application status per college. Have a look at Cornell's applicants & acceptances....many have lower SATs & class standing than one would think to get in, particularly if you compare to other selective institutions on Ithaca's list....they even have a category called "guaranteed".

have a look:

As usual, very interesting Papa. What's the biggest lesson? Money counts in the feeder school frenzy...

Not sure I get the stats, what's the percentage at the beginning supposed to represent? Also, for schools like my kids' (H-W, in LA), they also got a bunch in Stanford and Berkeley, and a school like Poly (up the road in Pasadena) probably places a lot in MIT and CalTech. I know Ivy is be-all, and end-all, but there are a few Ivy-ish schools that if you add to the mix, may make the rankings slightly different (Duke?) -- plus dealing with the local school connection. Finally, looks like the tuition figures are outdated (I wish they were true!). But, still interesting!

BurnThis: The percentage is the percentage of kids attending Harvard, Yale, or Princeton over a four-year data period, the first numeral is the absolute number of such kids over the period, and the last numeral is the average class size.

Obviously, Harvard-Westlake is going to send more kids to Stanford that Roxbury Latin does. The Philadelphia-area schools on the list each send about twice as many kids to Penn as they do to HYP combined. It's just a ranked list on one narrow dimension, not the be-all and end-all. Including Stanford may have shifted things west a bit, and might have been a good idea.

The Wall St. Journal did something very similar a few years ago, tracking admissions into all of the Ivies (except Columbia, which refused to cooperate), plus Chicago, Duke, and Pomona (as a substitute for Stanford, which also refused to cooperate). It only had one year of data, and it excluded boarding schools and schools with graduating classes of fewer than 50, and schools that sent fewer than 20 students to the 10 schools. The class-size criterion cut out all but a couple of the hypersnooty NYC schools (the accompanying article said that Brearley and Collegiate would have been #1 and #2 on the list if they had each had one or two more graduates), and the broader index pulled in, for instance, the public school in Ithaca.

Anyone have the matriculation list for Stuyvesant High School in NYC (Public)? I believe it was something like 21 students ended up at Harvard this year.

Are there any stats on the top H.S.'s in Texas?

I'm confused. Andover has approx. 1000 students and it appears the
matriculation #'s add up to over 600. Couldn't be correct.

Galwaymum, the Andover numbers mean that over a four-year period, 167 graduates went to HYP out of an average graduating class size of 266. To get the annual percentage going to HYP, one has to divide the 167 by 4 (to get ~42). Then 42 divided by the average class size of 266 yields 15.8%.

there are some very strange decisions in the Ithaca profile haha, like a kid getting waitlisted at brown being the 5th decile of the class

and a kid applying to cornell with a 1.84 GPA...hahaha i know its Ithaca HS but youre still not getting in with a 1.84, although a kid did get in with an under 3.0, wonder how that kid with a 3.77 that got rejected feels...

For what its worth, there are two problems with the tuition numbers on Papa Chicken's otherwise very informative list.

First, a number of the schools are primarily boarding school, and the tuition listed is for day students.

Second, the numbers for at least some of the private day schools are for lower school. The upper school tuition numbers are much higher. For example, the tuition listed for Episcopal Academy in Merion is $16,750, while the upper school tuition is over $22,000

For reference, St. Ignatius is a very highly ranked Jesuit prep school. It is not a boarding school, and it is rather selective.
