Top 25 liberal arts colleges

Can we just replace every thread like this with a link to US News?

Group 1:
Amherst
Haverford
Pomona
Swarthmore
Williams

Group 2:
Bowdoin
Carleton
Wellesley
Wesleyan

Group 3:
Grinnell
McKenna
Middlebury
Oberlin
Vassar

Group 4:
Barnard
Bates
Bryn Mawr
Davidson
Kenyon
Macalester
Smith

Group 5:
Colby
Colgate
Hamilton
Mt. Holyoke
Trinity

Note: Harvey Mudd was purposefully excluded because although it’s small it’s not, IMHO, a true LAC.

^ i quite agree with your rankings. the only thing I would do is switch Wesleyan and Middlebury or just add Middlebury to Group 2

For having an overall experience, with well rounded kids, I would put COLGATE right to the top of any list and drop Haverford. Nothing against Haverford, but ask a 100 people on the east coast not going through the college admission process if they ever heard of it, or even know where it is and see what they say.

What does asking on people on the east coast mean in relation to Haverford?

I’m from the southwest (tx) and Haverford is quite popular here, actually around here people have never heard of Colgate. And I am talking about people not in the college process.

I’m from the NE area and have never heard of Colgate except when referring to the toothpaste. I have, however, heard of Haverford.

Why is it relevant which schools one has and has not heard of? This isn’t the “Top 25 Schools pnb2002 Has Heard Of” thread.

Well pnb2002 was just responding to WaitingDad’s post.
…

Ooops, I should have added Reed to Group 4 in my post #102

Holy Cross and Bucknell should be in the 20-25 range when factors such as alumni networks, athletics(football and basketball games againsi most of the Ivies), Unlike most top25 LAC’s, Holy Cross is close to a major city(Boston). These 2 schools have strong placement in the business world.

Nothing against [name of elite LAC here], but ask a 100 people on the east coast not going through the college admission process if they ever heard of it, or even know where it is and see what they say.

Nothing against stupid arguments, but ask anyone with a brain in their skull if the uneducated masses not knowing the name of a school is detrimental and tell me what they say.

Most people that I’ve talked to have never heard of schools like Haverford or Swarthmore, or even Williams or Amherst. Fortunately, those aren’t necessarily the kind of people who matter when it comes to admission to grad schools, job placement, etc. In PA many have not even heard of any of the schools in the Tri-Co consortium, which are arguably the most elite schools in the state, but they know all about penn state. Does that mean penn state is better than Swat, Haverford, or BMC? LOL.

Williams, Pomona, Amherst, Swarthmore

the rest…

I know this is a late response but i think nowadays it’s this in groups, who cares about specific numbers.

amherst williams pomona swat.

haverford bowdoin middlebury carleton

davidson hamilton wesleyan macalester vassar colgate

colby bates kenyon

skidmore conn college trinity dickinson.

Note: i think it’s time for hamilton to be placed above colby and bates, and even colgate. it really doesn’t get enough rep despite it’s high UNSEWS ranking. it is harder to get into, also has #1 chinese program in country, #2 writing program, a huge endowment, and very strong departments in general. also the people accepted actually have higher stats than davidson, colby and bates. although it is in an unfavorable location, it should be considered in a higher grouping than it is currently.
