I've been reading all the issues lately with auto-admission, and how UT is doing things differently this year. I know no one has received any notification of acceptance including those that even fall under top 1%. It's also under my understanding that 75% of the Freshman class will consist of auto-admits, yet this is decided by the students that apply; they will first look at all top 1% then 2% then 3% and so on. This leaves the possibility that the cut off might be top 7% or even 6%.

I'm currently top 7.1% of my accredited high school class leaving me really at top 8% to UT. I have a pretty low SAT score of 1700, but I have plenty of extra curricular:
Senior Class President
President of Varsity Choir
Vice-President of National Honor Society
Vice-President of Show Choir
Secretary of Spanish Club
Member of Key Club
Member of Speech and Debate Team
Member of Theater

Along with this, I have numerous awards and a good amount of service hours. I also have a total of 33 hours of dual credit. I applied early October and made sure my essays were well written and sent in the recommended letter of recommendation.

I am honestly worried that there's a big possibility I may not get accepted even though I fall under the top 8% rule due to the different circumstances of admissions this year. I'd really appreciate some feedback.

Don’t worry. UT has proclaimed the auto admits rule of 8% for 2013, so you are guaranteed for auto admission to UT. It will not be right if they change the rule now to the 2013 applicants. The thing that is not automatic is your choice of majors.

The cut off for people applying this year (graduating HS 2013) is 8%. Period. The only time UT looks at kids at the 1% level, 2% level, etc when deciding who gets into what major, specifically McCombs. But admission to the University is top 8% even if that fills 90% of the class. UT’s yield in is no way your problem.

FYI…McCombs no longer admits students based solely on class rank. In fact, this practice ended for all majors/colleges for the freshmen 2012 class. All students are now placed based on holistic review.

So, in terms of the OP, you can be automatically accepted into UT based on an 8% class rank, but not be placed in your preferred major based on that rank. Other components, such as SAT/ACT scores, extracurricular activities, etc. make up the holistic review process.

I wasn’t trying to imply that class rank was the only measure McCombs uses, as you are correct that holistic review is in play, but it is rare to get an acceptance into McCombs outside the top 10%. Also old habits die hard and many times applications will be reviewed holistically in rank order.
