Top Academics and Music

I am a rising senior who is looking for academically rigorous Christian colleges with strong reputations that also have conservatory level music programs. I had originally planned to stay at a Christian school in Texas, but was rather unimpressed by the academic mediocrity of many of the Christian schools here. Many of the state or secular private schools have the best music programs, so it has been very frustrating to find Christ+outstanding academics+great music quality. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm considering Chapman University, Wheaton College, DePauw University, Houghton College, Grove City, and others. I want strong academics, strong music, preferably in a large city, small-medium sized school, rigorous/competitive, high graduation rate, and oh yes, nice financial aid. Any suggestions?

…BYU?

You will have to prioritize which of those three is the most important to you: music, academics, Christianity, in what order exactly? It would be tough to find one school that is super strong in all three. It would also be useful to know exactly what flavor of Christianity you’re talking about. Many years back, Chapman was founded by a Christian organization, (as were so many colleges and universities back in the day) but the main religious center (a beautifully designed building!) on campus is now ecumenical, and the student body includes practitioners of various faiths, as well as some students that do not practice any religion. Religion does not seem to be a dominant presence on the Chapman campus. There are religious clubs and organizations, however. You may want to make a point of meeting with reps of such clubs when you do your campus visits to see how many members such clubs have and how active they are.

Have you tried coming at this through another angle and first looking at those colleges specifically affiliated with your religion? You may be eligible for special scholarships if you are already affiliated with a religious organization that also sponsors a college or university.

I’d have to say that of those you listed, Wheaton would stand out as the top choice. Outstanding academics, incredible Music Conservatory and great faith development. One question I would have is the type of Music program you are looking for. I assume that you’re looking for a more classic(al) program, of which Wheaton would certainly fit the bill. However, if you’re looking for something more contemporary, I might have a different opinion.

I don’t know Wheaton’s financial aid process, but my impression is while they don’t have a ton of merit aid, their need-based program is generous. But that’s just an impression…
