How tough is it to apply to top B-schools w/ gpa of 3.0 from cornell Mech Eng major? (assuming I get around 700 GMat score and work for 4-5 years in engg company)
I can see and read that top B-schools have average gpa around 3.5-3.6..
So I was wondering if this is possible at all or If Im just totally insane and out of my mind

I think it would be pretty tough. I would guess that you would need to ace the rest of your application. Keep in mind that the average GMAT score for top business schools is just over 700. In order to have a good shot, I would think you would need a GMAT score of 750.

That being said, with a 700, you would probably make a good candidate for a top 20 school.

BTW, apply early in the process to give yourself the best chance.

GPA is not very important for an MBA. Work experience is likely worth several factors more.

Work experience is the most important criteria but GPA is still important to a point. One can make up for a low GPA by blowing away the GMAT. However, a 700 isn't blowing away the GMAT for the cream of the crop business schools.

I disagree with victorwega. You have a 3.0 gpa from a tough major at a prestigious school. Just get some really good work experience and you'll be fine.

It is certainly "possible" but what business school are you trying to get into? If you are trying for a school like Wharton then I don't like your chances unless you blow away the rest of your application (ie Work experience, essays, etc). If you are trying to get into a top 20 program like Cornell (Johnson) then I'm sure you will be fine.
