I am looking for top business schools where I can receive merit money. Currently my number 1 is university of michigan, but i do not believe i will qualify for merit money there. An example of current schools i am looking at that could possibly give me merit money are northeastern and university of pittsburgh. State schools are great for me because sports are also somewhat important to me, but i will take any private school suggestion as well. Private or Public i will be highly interested. Even if you think it may be unlikely, i am curious to see anywhere where i may have a chance at merit money. Unfortunately, i probably wont qualify for financial aid. Thank you!

That’s not likely. Top schools have top stats students. They either don’t give merit or they only give to tippy top stats students. Or they give small amounts that don’t make a dent in the costs.

Well, how much do you need?

How much will your parents pay?

There are schools that cost $50-60k per year, but they may only give you $5k per year. Would your parents pay the rest? If not, how much would they pay?

Indiana Univ costs about $45k per year. Their merit for OOS students is $1k - 11k. I would imagine that the $10k-11k awards are going to those with ACT 34+ or SAT equivalent. A 1440 M+CR is about an ACT 32, so you might get about $8k-9k per year.

For instance, if your parents will only pay $15k per year, then that means you need a full tuition scholarship…and those are harder to get at the schools that you may be considering.

What field are you interested in? For accounting, the big 4 recruit high GPA students from just about any college. IB and management consulting are much more exclusive. I think as a penn resident, penn state, Pitt and Villanova are good options. Definitely apply to Penn as a Hail Mary. Look at ohio state, and minnesota( Carlson) also. Notre dame may be worth a shot also.

I have to scroll down pretty far to even get to Northeastern. Those aren’t top business schools, which is completely independent of my background.

My parents will pay around 35-40k if necessary i think. And cornellian, obviously you are not well versed in undergraduate business topics because if the rankings do not have wharton as a number one, they are certainly not rankings i would trust. On us news, northeastern is 25 and Pitt is in the low 40s. Personally, i’d rather not waste over 200k on the least respected ivy league school, just so i can say i attend an ivy. And also, i have seen many students attend cornell with a 2150 SAT as well. Please get your facts straight before you bring your arrogant, and misinformed, attitude to forums

And i am probably interested in marketing or finance, and i am appying to penn for sure, due to the fact i am an actual philadelphia resident which is helpful to them, as well as my school and penn having a good relationship with admittance

I would recommend considering the best school that you can get into. You can borrow if necessary and the payback period could be short. There is a real tiering in business schools and in many fields there’s a big distinction between a top 10 school and lesser ranked schools. Its not always true and each case is different, but the extra value of a top school over a lifetime of work can be enormous.

Miami University-Ohio would probably give you a nice amount of merit $. The Farmer School of Business has a good reputation. Indiana-Kelley School of Business is great although I believe they have changed their merit aid- it used to be guaranteed - my child was awarded $13/yr last year ( $11k highest oos state award plus $2k for honors college ). Your stats are very good and while you might get admitted to UMich you may not get in Ross and I would think doubtful for any merit aid. Lots of school out there!

Hi CD,
I’m not sure which US News rankings you are looking at that has NE at 25 and Pitt in the 40’s, so I can’t really comparison shop those rankings for you. However, the rankings I see have Alabama (Manderson Business School) at 58, NE and Pitt tied at 61. Alabama has amazing scholarships and with your stats, I think you would have a full tuition scholarship (you’d have to check for sure). Also, the various schools/departments give additional fellowships and stipends that are quite extraordinary. It might be worth at least a perusal of their scholarship page. We were there a month ago and toured Manderson. Impressive facilities, impressive students, impressive internship opportunities. You have to apply by Dec. 1 to get scholarships, but the scholarships are guaranteed for specific stats. The stipends and fellowships generally come later in the spring and are based on your stats and scholarship apps, I think.

I haven’t checked in a while, but historically there have been lots of lenders to students at top business schools. I would think that is till the case.

In terms of payback period, top paying in finance and consulting are much easier to obtain from a top b-school than from a lesser one. The difference in comp between those jobs and others leads to the short payback period. To take it one step further, many lower ranked business schools are not that helpful at all in finding jobs. When I applied I was only interested in top 10 schools, I didn’t see the value in the others. Just my opinion.
