top choices for freshman dorm housing at university of madison/wisconsin

I would love to hear from either prior students or parents regarding good dorms (vs. private ) options at Madison....My son has been told to stay in the Southeast section - so any dorms in that area that would be good or not good..? Another option that has been recommended is the Statesider, which is private...thoughts on that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much

The new Ogg is really nice (SE) and good location to central campus.

There are a number of threads on the UW-Madison forum about the dorms. The people who post there will be most familiar with all the options.

I went to UW in the dark ages, but the dorm hand-wringing is still the same! Lake dorms for scenery and character but old and far away, Southeast dorms for location but not much character. Chadbourne for all-girls and central location. I’d stay away from the private dorms— the dorm experience is so important (my best friends are still my floormates, men and women, from good ol’ Fourth Floor S****y Witte! And yes, the new Ogg is pretty nice. The old Ogg— yikes. It’s the people, not the place.
