Top Courses For Mcat!

MCAT PREP:
Of the following subjects: Microbiology, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology, Anatomy....which are the most important. Please rank them from 1-5. Thanks a lot.

Organic Chem
Physiology
Microbiology
Biochemistry
Anatomy

Although it varies from test to test. On the one I took, there were only around 9 questions of orgo (which is supposed to make up around 40% of the problems) and a ton of microbiology. Go figure.

Genetics is also a good one.

You asked a trick question! The real answer is Organic Chemistry and nothing else! The reason is the MCAT is based on introductory level sciences: first year college/university General Biology, Physics, General Chem and Organic Chem (do not have to believe me, get it from www.aamc.org). You definitely do not need to take physiology, micro, etc to ace the MCAT. I was in a physics program, never took genetics and got a 14 in Bio Sci on the MCAT.

Of course there will be lots of genetics or micro on the test but if it is more advanced than intro to bio (first year) then the answer is already in the passage and previous knowledge is superfluous. Solid intro courses, good prep/practice and do all AAMC practice and you will be fine!

BTW, there is a free AAMC test here: https://services.aamc.org/Publications/index.cfm?fuseaction=Product.displayForm&prd_id=49&prv_id=38&cfid=1&cftoken=E5B5E477-2FFD-4AEF-8D9954D21ED0EE95

There are other free online tests here (sometimes kaplan/PR also give on campus tests): www.mcat-prep.com, www.bestmcatbooks.com

good luck!

i looked at that test, and having taken AP bio in highschool (and scoring a 4 on the exam), most of the bio questions were familiar to me. although wouldve gotten none of them right, i do remember knowing some of the answers

other inputs?

any other advice, I mean I guess would takig those courses with emphasis on orgo be the best approach to scoring a 36+?

No, being well versed, and super well rounded in all science areas will lead you to a high score. You have to know the four basic courses extremely well and be able to apply it. Not just spit out an answer or definition, but be able to manipulate problems using your knowledge. That is what gets you the high score.

The MCAT tests your reasoning and comprehension alot more than it tests your science knowledge. If you know the science you're only 1/3 of the way there if you dont have comprehension and cant use logic at all.
