Interesting. /***/

The first set of data provided represents approximately 76% of the students for the entire entering class for the USNWR Top 20. Based on the data supplied above, I get the following as the top 20 feeder states to the USNWR Top 20 (all private).

16.7% New York
13.6% California
7.3% Texas
8.5% New Jersey
7.1% Illinois
6.8% Massachusetts
6.2% Pennsylvania
5.6% Florida
4.1% Maryland
3.8% Georgia
3.3% Connecticut
2.8% Ohio
2.5% Virginia
1.7% Indiana
1.4% Tennessee
1.4% Michigan
1.3% Washington
1.3% North Carolina
1.1% Missouri
0.8% Minnesota

Here are those states in terms of their percentage of national population:

6.4% New York
12.2% California
7.8% Texas
2.9% New Jersey
4.3% Illinois
2.1% Massachusettes
4.2% Pennsylvania
6.0% Florida
1.9% Maryland
3.1% Georgia
1.2% Connecticut
3.8% Ohio
2.6% Virginia
2.1% Indiana
2.0% Tennessee
3.4% Michigan
2.1% Washington
3.0% North Carolina
2.0% Missouri
1.7% Minnesota

My interpretation is that state in the Northeast tend to do far better in placement in the Top 20 schools than their % of national population would warrant. This is unsurprising given the 8 Ivies and MIT in that region, not to mention the long historical and legacy ties that exist in that region.

hawkette, beyond the location of the Ivies/MIT, many of the nation's most selective private high schools (which preselect for characteristics desired by the top schools) are also in the Northeast. Ivy grads are probably overrepresented in the Northeast as well. Since their kids have an advantage in admissions, this may contribute to the results you observe. [This may be what you meant by legacy ties]. Further, it is plausible that a significant percentage of the nation's top public high schools are there as well, but I don't know how you'd measure that.

There are also very good public schools in the Northeast...not just private.

where on IPEDS did u obtain this data if i can ask?!

Can you post stats for U Minnesota (Twin Cities)?

Does being from a state high on the list mean that you're more likely to be accepted? Or that the pool is larger and so you're comparatively at a disadvantage to those from states lower down on the list? Perhaps the two even each other out?

Here is a link to the IPEDS Peer Analysis System

After selecting your primary institution and at least 3 for a comparison group then go to Reports and Statistics
then Institutions Data
then Enrollment
then Residence and Migration
then Qualifying Variable
then US
then Select All States (you can check foreign too)
then First-time/Degree-seeking Undergraduates
then Continue
then Fall 2005 (or whatever)
then Finished Selection
then Continue (to view on screen) OR you can download a comma delimited file, which is what I do so I can use Excel to manipulate, sort, etc.

I am surprised that Minnesota has so many students from Wisconsin. Do they have an exchange agreement? Perhaps the frozen 10,000 lakes allows them to ice skate all the way to MN in the winter. The ice on the 10,000th lake doesn't thaw until June...that's what I heard.

Wisconsin students pay WISCONSIN in-state tuition (which is less expensive even than Minnesota in-state tuition) to attend the U of MN. And the border between the states is very close to the U of MN--some counties in WI get their television and local radio mostly from Minnesota stations.

I think the tuition reciprocity rules have just been revised.

Very interesting! I wonder why Yale is so popular in California (or not as popular in NY)?

^ Cal's colors: "Yale" Blue and Gold.

Just for the record: the entry for Brown in the first post should show 43 from Maryland.

Maybe New Yorkers know what New Haven looks like. I haven't been there in years, but it was neither a garden spot nor an interesting urban environment. [Who knows, maybe it has changed.]

Look at how lopsided the numbers for CA publics are.

^ What do you mean by lopsided? UT-Austin and UNC are similar.
