Anyone know the top undergraduate film schools (ranked) ?

emerson
nyu
usc
columbia
ucla

I'm not sure if film programs are ranked on the undergraduate level, but on the departmental level as a whole, it's usc/nyu>>>ucla>>>anything else.

USC and NYU are both distinct from one another though. USC is seen more of an industry school with more connections while NYU has more of an indie streak.

After the top three there is a huge drop off

5. I really don't know... columbia only has film for grad school but that program is really good. The undergrad program is Film Studies so its theory, not production.
AFI also is a Great grad school for film but nothing in terms of undergrad. If I were you, I'd look at schools in the LA area as they probably have film programs. University of Hawaii has a new film production degree (also a video game design degree) but it's not ranked yet since it just started. It's a good program though with most of the professors hired from the big film schools. The guy who started the program is the producer of the Superman movie and he took 4 students with him last year to intern on the film in Australia. The program isn't established yet but the profs are great and there is tons of funding/opportunity and internships. There are only 25 people in the major and the application requires only essays, teacher recs, portfolio list, and several creative writing samples (you don't need to submit a video, although if you have one it helps). click on the link: www.hawaii.edu/acm
It's pretty neat! Several students have had their work in festivals already since its so hands on. Even first year students make like 5 videos (1 short film). Other state schools have similar programs but make sure they are well funded and check the bios of the profs. Sorry, i don't mean to go on about one program but it really is good. USC, NYU, and UCLA are by far the top 3 though so look into those. Emerson is ok but not in the league of the others. I personally think USC is way better than NYU just because of it's location. Good luck!

See my problem is that I was accepted into NYU, USC, Ohio State U, and Case Western, but I applied as an engineer. Now I want to double major in film and business. I'm aware that NYU and USC are insanely competitive when it comes to film so I'm not sure if I can switch majors (at least not easily). Is it worth it to study film at OSU and Case (they offer film studies) and then if I decide to go this route attend graduate school at USC or NYU?

Graduate level at either USC or NYU is always a good option. Were you accepted into CNTV/USC or Tisch/NYU? If not, then you would have to get in those programs after the fact and that's not easy. What do you want to study in those dept's? Production, dramatic writing?

I was thinking about production.

Business and film production? That's an odd mixture.

Business and Production-could be the makings of a great producer!!!

I'd go to USC. If you go there you will still have the opportunity to take some film classes and there are tons of volunteer/internship positions available since you are in LA. Even if you can't get in the major (but you can try every semester to reapply) you could at least do a minor which will also prepare you for a film career. Plus, a minor in film could help you decide if you want to study it more in grad school and you'll have another degree to fall back on. Film isn't a career where you need a degree, just connections/knowledge, and you can get both of those things by being at USC and minoring in production.

for film:
1. usc
2. nyu
3. ucla

Savannah College of Art & Design

Kaitylin's recommendations about USC and film are spot-on, but I believe that you have to apply for admission into the film minor. In any case there are a large number of student films being shot on campus and they are always looking for crew. Plus there is a student-run 24-7 TV station on campus where you can volunteer.

School of Visual Arts is pretty good, especially if you're into independent filmmaking.

USC- it's in LA, it's a huge department, and lots of connections to film industry - presentations and industry people always come to campus. Furthermore, they work with Thornton School of Music to collaborate with composers and musicians, to network and form relationships that would hopefully last into your professional future.

Thanks for your insight.

One thing about USC though....they view film as a "lifestyle", which means it's unbelievably difficult to doubler major. So I'd only do that if you wanted to minor in film. If you do the major you'd have to learn business by the end of your sophomore year and still take all your core classes, because the film program completely takes over your junior and senior year.
