Top finance universities?

Smeal is a reach, but given his GPA, yes, I think it is a possibility.

This is a forum, i dont need to be articulated or have proper spelling. There are lots of great business schools, all the schools that you have listed as well as Indiana Bloomington are great, but there arent many or really any that are real feeder schools that he could get into. How many students are in the Indiana kelley school of business, thousands, yet only 22 at most enter into the finance field. Its a matter of personal preference, i think differently than you. I am a student who wants to go into finance and i reside in so cali just like the op. I dont want to attend a UC, but that is not because of any particular school, its because i want a change in my settings, i want to live with 4 seasons, with the energy of some place else like chicago or nyc.

Ok, tipperian you have all these schools, you need to do some research for yourself and figure out what you need to do. I suggest though, dont go to bentley or babson since they have a singular focus business, and these days lots of people change majors, stay open minded and try and find some more about finance if you are so interested. It is more than just picking some stocks making some money.

I have been doing research and have been looking at all my options. And because of your guys' info, I will be filling more college applications than i first expected. And I am not uninformed in this subject southpasdena, i know it has more to do with other things than just stocks.

good luck on those apps

Thank you.

Get back to us when you ge those acceptance letters, take care!

Hey Cre8tive1, you still there?

I'll ask you the question....you'll probably know. Im applying to Ohio State University because its not too dificult to get into, and it also has the 7th or 8th ranked finance dept. in the country. So I was just wondering if any top finance companies recruit from this school.

barely any will recruit from there. Accounting companies are more likely to recruit from midwest school (excluding michigan). Companies such as KPMG, Ernst and young etc etc. You might get some of the consulting firms that broke off from accounting companies and you will get smaller regional finance/insurance companies (insurance companies invest a lot of money which means they need analysts etc etc) If you go to ohio state which isnt ranked 7 or 8, the would be Indiana (i dont know the real rankings, but i would believe it would be low to high teens, but it doesnt really matter) you will have to do lots of finance job hunting by yourself, using alumni, fraternities and clubs.

By the way accounting is a great way to break into finance for the first few years. do accounting for a few years get a masters and then step foot into the finance world. Accounting do just as well or better than many that entered analyst positions right off the bat

Thanks for your info southpasdena, but FYI, here is my proof of OSU's rank.....
http://www-afa.adm.ohio-state.edu/u-majors/pdf/finance.pdf
It says it in the excerpt on the right of the page.

maybe i confused the rankings..either way they arent to important. I cant give you a specific list of companies that recruit, some schools list recuiting schools on their site (go to business school page and look for careers) while others dont. Schools usually post this more for their graduate programs. If there is a specific kind of company you want to work for, find other companies like it and search there websites in the career section, many times they also list a group of core schools they recruit. You may want to look at Iowa, they have a special program where if you have a 3.5 you may apply (doesnt have to be 3.5 but recommended) There is an endowment by a alumni that sponsors this program that accepts around 30-35 per year in which all graduates thus far have been placed 100% into finance positions.

i figured out why i thought indiana was like number 7 or 8, its becuase Ohio is quoting their rankings from 2005, but i was quoting from 2006 rankings.

Oh I see, well whats OSU's ranking for 2006? It couldnt have dropped by much, if any.

the book store no longer has the us news ranking magazine, so i cant help there sorry, but i know someone has posted it on this site, you just have to search

Alright thanks.

I have also debated between universities for finance. Which one is better between Maryland(Smith) and Penn State(Smeal) for finance? It seems they are neck and neck, but what do employers prefer and better?

Ya those two schools are neck and neck on the first page rankings, but southpasdena probably knows the answer to your question.

i really dont know about those as i smeal will not admit transfers after a year and smith is in an area i dont want to live, so i havent done my research for them. I have seen more finance companies recruiting at Maryland, but i cant say which is better.
