S is one of the best runners in the country. 3.7uw. 1990 SATs. Good Extra Curriculars. Underrepresented State. Chances?

You have none. Zero. Zip. Nada.
We don't do sports here. We build things.

If he's one of the best runners in the country chances are he'll be heavily recruited by many universities. If you're looking for a mix of top-notch athletics + top-notch academics, why don't you take a look at Stanford?

Harvard doesn't give athletic scholarships, but they do like to recruit athletes. Academic stats look a little on the low side, but what are his athletic stats? PRs?

Contact the coach, to see if your son will placed on the top of recruits.

Contact the coach, to see if your son will placed on the top of recruits.

If your son is a national top athlete he will start to be bombarded by recruiting from colleges across the country. He can take the initiative to contact the Harvard coach, but the coach will already know about him. The coach will be able to tell him where he would fit on the team, and can get a read from the admissions committee about the likelihood of getting in. If the coach thinks he will be admitted, and wants him, expect heavy recruiting from Harvard. If you don't get lots of attention from the coach, then either he has better people coming, or he does not think your son will get admitted.

If he is not heavily recruited for athletics, and he does not have another hook, then he is in the pool of thousands of kids with similar stats applying to Harvard.

The "underrepresented state" is the only strong point there besides the sports involvement. The other posters who have suggested contacting the coach have offered the best advice: the coach will know how good is good enough to offer an admission boost at a particular school.

I think he has very good chances. Don't underestimate the benefit of sports.

yah stanford is a good thing to look at for him. but yeah, definitely worth applying to harvard too.

I'm a runner myself, and I follow national running pretty heavily. Would you mind posting his name so I can get a better idea of who we're talking about? If you don't want to give that out, I completely understand.
