Hello everyone,
I have been struggling for a while to find a list of the top four year BA/BS of architecture programs. Does anyone know where I can find such a thing? I am only able to find the BArch rankings.
Thanks!!
I don’t know of any list or rating of BA/BS programs; however most universities that offer the BArch and/or the MArch also offer a BA or a BS in architecture, architectural studies or environmental design. In addition there are a few schools, both universities and liberal arts colleges, that have good pre-professional architecture majors, even though they don’t have their own architecture schools.
BA/BS architecture programs vary quite a bit in admissions – in some cases you apply directly to the school of architecture and begin the major on day one. In some you are accepted to the college/university first, then declare your major later. Also, some require the submission of a portfolio with your application, some do not.
If you’d like to provide more information on your grades, scores, financial restrictions, plus geographic, size and cultural preferences, we could come up with some suggestions. Whether you’ll be in the position to submit a portfolio is also a factor.
As I mentioned in your other thread, MArch programs admit students from a wide range of undergraduate backgrounds, including those who don’t have undergraduate degrees in architecture. Some MArch programs will automatically admit BA/BS students in good standing from their own universities, but at others internal admissions can be unpredictable.
Yale posts a list of the educational background of its MArch students, which will give you a good idea of the diversity of experience:http: //architecture.yale.edu/people/enrolled-students#MArch I First
I do not have a portfolio @momrath
I am asking because I am not sure how the programs are for a lot of the schools that I applied to (except HYP which are highly unlikely)
I applied to WashU, Tufts, UVA (EA), Maryland (EA), HYP, Northeastern (EA, accepted), MiamiOH (RD, accepted), BU, UMich, UPenn (deferred ED), and Case Western (EA, accepted)
@TheWaffleMan149, I think you have a good list with lots of upside potential for the RD round. How did you do at UVA and Maryland?
Among your acceptances, I’d consider Northeastern’s program one of the strongest especially if settling in the Boston area is an option for you. I don’t know much about MiamiOH architecture, but it’s an excellent academic choice.
If you’re interested in adding a couple more less selectives I believe Cincinnati, Auburn and Clemson are still accepting applications. They’re strong architecture programs and no portfolio is required.
Doesn’t UMich BS Architecture require a portfolio?
@momrath I don’t hear back from either one until the end of January (although that isn’t really an early decision anymore).
Michigan does, but they also don’t let you declare architecture as a major freshman year. I guess I would have to independently develop a portfolio freshman year. Honestly, I wasn’t a big fan of Michigan, but I needed more schools that were more reasonable.
