hey guys, what LAC's do you think are the best for studying Anthropology? Please dont base this on "rankings", but things like study abroad opportunities, class sizes, overall academic experience, professors, ect....
I plan to major in Anthro but I would also like to minor/concentration in Environmental Science/Studies. Which schools also have good environmental studies programs?

any help is welcome!!!!

lol, about a quarter of my schools graduating class ends up at BGSU...definitely looking for something more...selective. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Colby and Bowdoin are both great for environmental studies.

I don't really agree with picking an LAC on the basis of a single department. Not saying that you shouldn't consider departments of interest, but start with the "A-level" attributes of the schools to find a good fit in terms of campus culture. Then, narrow that list.

Having said that, I'll post the top schools in production of future Anthropology PhDs per graduate in the next post. There are some clearly strong Anthro schools (specifically Bryn Mawr and Beloit). Then, I'll post the same thing for PhDs in two somewhat related fields: Sociology and Anthropology. Many of the schools that are strong in these areas (for example, Swarthmore) have a combined Sociology/Anthropology department.

Middlebury College had the first Enviro Studies program in the country, and it is still going strong...

Macalester's anthropology department is excellent. Jack Weatherford is the school's most well known prof (check out 'Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World'). He's an amazing prof (despite being famous he can teach) and advises a lot of students. All anthro majors are actually required to study abroad, so you'll have great opportunities for that.
The Environmental Studies department is also great, and you can design an ES major to overlap with Anthro, so it'd be pretty easy to do a double major.
