Top Political Science Programs at Public Schools

I need a safety/match school that is a public school that has a good political science program. Does anyone have any rankings or opinions they could share?

My goal is to attend an ivy league law school after my undergraduate experience. Assuming that I currently have the stats to be a competitive undergraduate applicant to an ivy league school, what would be some prestigious public schools I could apply to for political science?

According to the last USNWR, below are the top ranked Publics in Political Science:

3 University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

5 University of California-Berkeley

7 University of California-San Diego

10 University of California-Los Angeles

13 Ohio State University

13 University of North Carolina-Chapell Hill

16 University of Wisconsin-Madison

18 University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

22 Michigan State University

22 Texas-A&M University-College Station

22 University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign

25 Indiana University-Bloomington

25 University of Iowa

25 University of Texas-Austin

25 University of Washington

29 University of California-Davis

29 University of Maryland-College Park

35 Pennsylvania State University-University Park

35 University of California-Irvine

37 Florida State University

37 University of Arizona

37 University of Virginia *

*Although not ranked as high as other publics, UVa has excellent Law School placement, certainly on par with Michigan and Cal.

Also keep in mind that to OOS applicants, the UCs (particularly Cal UCLA and UCSD), Michigan, UNC and UVa are matches (potentially even reaches in the case of Cal, UCLA, UNC and UVa), not safeties.

Despite it’s #22 ranking above, i would take a look at Michigan State for it’s James Madison residential college. It’s a small public policy school within Michigan State that is very well respected and places quite a few people in grad/law schools. You get the small classes, close community, and prof. interaction of a LAC but the opportunities (and tuition) of a big research university. This is, as of now, my top choice as a prospective political science/public policy major.

University of Iowa is a great school, and their application process is a snap.

To the OP:

Why does it have to be a public school? I can understand looking for a public school in your own state, but what’s so special about OOS public schools? If the issue is money, I would point out that paying for a OOS public school is usually not much cheaper than a private school, and private schools will often times provide better aid.

Yeah. Word.
