Top programs?

What is University of Virginia known for? Is it good in math/science?

Everything!! :)
I seriously can't think of anything that sticks out, because UVA is great at EVERYTHING. That's exactly what makes it so unique- its not a great school just because of one department's success -all of its schools (Arts & Sciences, Nursing, Architecture, Engineering) and departments are strong!
I have, however, heard some say that VTech is a better idea for engineering- i know they have a great engineering school- but I am not sure why you would do that over UVA Engineering...(you'd have to ask someone who has experienced this themselves.)

i forgot to mention this- UVA is also known for its excellent mix of both academics and social life. Sports and social activities are much more prevalent at UVA than at many schools at similar academic levels, making it a great overall experience.

Technically wise, VTech may be better, but I've spoken to employers, alumni, and current students, and come to the conclusion that UVA e school emphasizes the liberal arts part of the education a bit more. As a result we graduate engineers who are better at communicating with others and foster better work place relationships as well.

But generally speaking, UVA is strong in everything. It's one of the reasons why I came here.

UVA and VT engineering are different. Neither is better than the other. I like the liberal arts side to UVA's e-school. I know some people at VT who wouldn't leave VT just to avoid liberal arts classes. Both are great e-schools.

As for strengths, it is a very well-rounded school. However, if you want some stand out programs: McIntire (comm school) is in the top-10 ranked undergrad b-schools. Last time I checked it was in the top-5, but I don't know for sure what it is now. The Nursing School is top-ranked due to its attachment to UVA Hospital. Biomedical Engineering is great for the same reason. The economic and political science departments are strong as well due to some top professors. Those are a few of many...

McIntire is ranked second only to Wharton by Business Week.
