<p>But it is just a spending rank, has nothing to do with "top research". Anything without Berkeley in the top 10 is WRONG. And this one is just an index of the school size and their medical research volumes.</p>

<p>As 99% of research grant money is awarded on a competitive basis, the success in obtaining grants is a good measure of quality work. Yes, medical research is a big chunk--about 30% so it is hard to be in the top 10 without a medical school. And yes it's a competition for the big boys.</p>

<p>That was the first thing that pooped in my mind <em>edit-I mean popped</em> where were UCBerkeley and UCSF, do school are nothing but!</p>

<p>I do find it strange that Harvard is not on that list, despite their heavily research-oriented medical school.</p>
