Top Scholars/Honors Weekend--March 2014

Good morning everyone!

Since the 2018 acceptance thread is getting lengthy, thought I'd start one for Scholars/Honors Weekend logistics!

We live in Montgomery County, MD, right outside Washington, DC, and my D is thrilled with her Tulane/Honors College acceptance! Still waiting to hear from UMiami and our flagship, UMD/College Park, but Tulane is definitely in her top 2 or 3 dream schools!

We're attending the Scholars/Honors weekend in March. Booked air and hotel last week. I called Admissions beforehand to inquire about space for March vs. April and I was reassured that we were free to choose either option.

We're flying into NOLA mid-morning on Saturday, March 15, so that we'll have most of the day to explore on our own. SUPER EXCITED! We've been around the world, but never to NOLA, not sure how that happened lol! We're staying at the Hilton Garden Inn--French Quarter for 2 nights, $139/night. Be sure and ask for the special Tulane rate!

My D has joined the Class of 2018 FB group and says everyone is super nice! Looking forward to meeting some of you in a few months! :)

We are very excited to visit with our daughter for Honors Weekend in March. We booked airfare and our hotel as well. We are tentatively staying at the JW Marriott on Canal Street. My husband did not ask if there were any special Tulane rates so that is why I use the adverb tentatively!

Our itinerary looks very similar to cheermom’s. We arrive Saturday afternoon and leave on Tuesday morning!

We can’t wait to visit and learn about all that Tulane is!

My daughter and husband are also going to be at the March weekend. (I have been to Tulane and NOLA before and he never has and someone has to watch D’s younger sister). They are also arriving mid-morning Saturday from NJ and leaving late afternoon on Monday. I’m very jealous. And cheermom, they are also staying at the HGI French Quarter! We also have in common that my D is also waiting to hear from Miami and MD.

I’m getting confused with all the different events. My son was accepted into the honors program but we have not gotten any information about the honors weekend. We have received several emails about Destination Tulane. I am assuming these are different events. I want to make sure he is signed up for the correct event. Thank you!

I am not sure why he did not get info about the honors weekend. Maybe it accidentally went into his spam folder? In any case, I would definitely recommend he take advantage of it rather than Destination Tulane. DT is a multiple series of campus tours, lunch with a current student, and possibly sitting in on a class that is open to all accepted students that are still making their college choice. HW is specifically for students like your son that have been invited into the HP, and is much more extensive. Besides the above (although I think the lunch is with current profs as well) they also get advising and they get to register for classes, even if they haven’t firmly decided on Tulane yet. There is also the overnight stay, and several talks they can attend. Here is the schedule: [Tulane Admission: Visit](http://www.admission.tulane.edu/honorsweekend/schedule-tent.php)

You can call admissions and get him signed up for one of the two weekends. Besides the one on March, the other is April 6-7 I think. Also there is an honors weekend home page you will see a link for on the page above. It requires a password. If he doesn’t have one, you can ask admissions about that as well. I would assume it is the same as his Gibson one, but perhaps not.

@Rgtmom - Congratulations on your son’s acceptance to Tulane! Is it one of his top choices?

The Top Scholars/Honors weekend (2-days) is a different program than Destination Tulane (1-day).

There’s a tentative schedule on the Tulane website but “invitations” haven’t officially gone out to accepted students. I’ve called Admissions a few times for further information, mostly because I wanted to snag good airfare! As of last week, I was told that detailed information will be going out “soon” and that we were free to choose either March or April. I’ve never been to NOLA so I’m very excited about the visit!

Hope to possibly meet you in March!

Thanks for the detailed info FC! Much appreciated.

Registration is not yet open for either of the HW’s (at least it wasn’t as of last Friday), but our flights and hotel are booked and we are ready for NOLA!

OK, good to know. They usually open up registration about now, so it definitely should be soon.

my daughter was admitted to Honors with a Presidential Scholarship and we haven’t heard anything about this.

I thought they referenced the Weekend in the letter that told her she had been accepted, got the scholarship and was in the Honors Program. But perhaps I am “misremembering”. In any case, now you have seen the links above, and she should be getting an email about this very shortly.

That is why sites like this are valuable. Gives people a lot more information and let’s them get a head start sometimes.

Hi MWDad816! I am a senior who has been admitted into the Honors Program at Tulane.

If you are looking for more information about the Top Scholars (Honors Weekend), it should have been included on the second page of your daughter’s acceptance letter. All it says is they encourage you to attend on either March 16-17 or April 6-7. This weekend will familiarize your daughter about opportunities available to her at Tulane and will allow her to meet other students and faculty members. A special invitation with more details will be emailed to her in the spring. You can access a tentative program schedule at http://admission.tulane.edu/topscholars/2014.php</a></p>

You or your daughter can contact me at mckenzieingram@******** if you have further questions or if she would like to talk with me about Tulane! I’m on the “Tulane University Class of 2018” Facebook page if she would like to contact me there. I would love to meet her!

I hope this helps!

Congratulations on your acceptance mckenzieingram! Is Tulane your top choice?

I am happy for those of you attending Honors Weekend. This was a complete game-changer for my D, as Tulane was her third choice. She was so impressed with all that Tulane had to offer, and decided that weekend to go to Tulane!

Just a word of caution for folks about hotel availability for the second Honors Weekend (April 6-7). Not sure what is going on in New Orleans that weekend but almost all of the hotels in the Garden District and the French Quarter area are already sold out. We have decided to move up to the first weekend.

Thank you cheermom20878! Tulane is my first choice and has been for a few years. I love it! New Orleans already feels like my home! I saw that your daughter is looking at UMiami. My brother is a Junior there, and I’m sure he would be willing to talk to her if she decides to attend UM. Let me know if I can help in any way!

OH2NOLA I am very excited about the Honors Weekend coming up! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for your consideration formertarheel, my mom looked into the hotel issue and there is a wrestling conference AND a teacher’s conference (or something like that) going on during the second Honors weekend, which caused many of the hotels to be booked. I wanted to go to the first Honors weekend so that I could see Tulane sooner, but I am going to be in Costa Rica for a mission trip that week. I’m sure we’ll find a hotel for the second weekend and everything will work out. Thanks again!

Good morning everyone! Just an FYI–my D received her “official” Top Scholars Weekend invitation in an email this morning.

mckenzieingram–Thanks for the generous offer of info from your brother, we’ll keep it in mind.

OH2NOLA–Can you possibly share what were your D’s first 2 choices and what was it exactly about the Honors weekend that bumped Tulane to her #1 choice? Thanks!!!

thanks for the responses that were directed to me. We did get the official email a couple of days ago, so all is well.

Can anyone recommend which event, April or March, is better? Whether in terms of class registration priority or type of kids that attend?

There is no difference.

I’m looking forward to the March Honors weekend. My son has booked the overnight stay. Sounds like Sunday is when most of the parent events are occurring. I’ll see some of you at the “gelato social”.
We’re from Houston - have flights and hotel reservations at the Saint.
