We haven't been to Tulane yet and D has been invited to TSW through her acceptance letter. We are psyched to finally come visit. Does anyone have an idea of program timing for the second day (ends at 3 pm/6 pm/8)? We're coming from Boston - I'd like to book travel early but don't know if we can leave the same day it ends or a day after. From CC it seems the invites don't come out for another month...last year's program is not online. Thanks :)

Two part answer, the second of which I apologize in advance for spending your money.

1) As best I can recall, if you schedule a flight out about 5 PM or later you should be fine. The afternoon of the second day is mostly an opportunity for the student to sit in on a couple of classes.

2) But, you are in New Orleans. I understand she is missing school, one of the parents might be missing work, etc. If you can stay the extra night and fly out the next day sometime, maybe mid-afternoon, it gives you more of a chance to explore New Orleans, including some of the off campus areas the students will take advantage of while they are there such as Audubon Park, Magazine Street, and the Oak/Maple Street areas. Plus, of course, enjoy more of the food. But as I say, that is an extra expense for hotel and meals, of course. Just a suggestion.

That is assuming, especially for #1, that they don’t change the agenda much. I suspect they won’t because they do realize people have to get back for school and work.

I second what FC said. :)

We are DEFINITELY going to spend an extra day there - I am trying to figure out ‘which side’ of it based on the programming. Is the first day all day? It will be at least 4 hours flight time so it does affect our timing. I haven’t been in years but am looking forward to visiting it again.

Yes, the first day is pretty much all day, especially for the student. I believe check in starts around 10 AM (maybe earlier) and the program starts at 11 AM with a couple of talks from the head of the Honors Program and the university President. Then there was a tour of campus, then lunch, then advising sessions for the kids and seminars for parents. Then everyone hooks back up for an ice cream social or something like that, then the kids go with their host for the evening and the parents are on their own. The parents come back the next day to gather up their kids at the end of the day, although I think there might be some activities planned for the parents if they choose. I am fuzzy on that one.

You certainly could come in a full day early and enjoy many of the same things. I was just thinking that by waiting until that Tuesday late afternoon to leave, it avoids rushing at the end of the TSW schedule and gives the student time to check things out they might have learned about during the overnight. But certainly either way works fine. I know people that had 4 PM flights and so had to leave TSW at 2 PM on Monday, and they still had a complete experience. The airport isn’t that far, and unless there is some major event going on that also ends around that time, getting through security and to the gate doesn’t take very long.

My son is traveling on his own to visit Tulane March 1-2. Neither of have been before, so its going to be and adventure for him.
I would like to book a shuttle for my son to get back to the airport on Monday. There is no details as to know where they will finish off. There seems to be 2 points of collection for the Shuttle: either “Tulane University- 2014 orientation” OR “Tulane University Aron Apts. Loading Zone On McAlister Extension”.
Also my son is planning on being hosted on Sunday night. Is there somewhere he can keep his luggage for the morning until he leaves for the airport?
I phoned the University yesterday and they said 2 hours would be enough to catch the flights. Too bad I booked already with southwest leaving at 4.40pm before reading the blog. The shuttle sheduled spick up is 1pm for his flight, so he may miss the last hour. Is there another alternative perhaps before I book the shuttle?
I don’t know for sure but I’m going to say that you will probably get a lot more information dealing with these logistics very soon.
That’s true. But if not, I would also say consider spending an extra $10-15 and let him just take a taxi on the return. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he found others taking a taxi at the same time, could share one and save a few bucks. But the extra flexibility might be worth the few extra $$. There are always taxis waiting at the corner of Willow and McAlister Place.
Thanks for your assistance. The cab spot worked perfect on the second day to take off around 3 to get our flight in the early evening. We had a lot of fun with a whole day in Nola before our two days on campus, which helped give my daughter a feel for the city as well as the campus.
