Top Scholars Weekend?

Anyone here who has previously attended? Do you know the schedule? Specifically the check in time for Saturday?

We have a situation where two scholarship weekends may collide for his top two schools.

Did you receive invite for Top Scholars Weekend? We are anxiously waiting here, the Dates are March 2nd-4th.

Last year the first invite packages were delivered on January 18

Does anyone know, are most of the first admits (December) given invitations to the top scholars weekend, or just some?

@tonils there are two weekends, one for in-state students and one for OOS.

Instate is Feb 23-25th and OOS is Mar 2-4th.

I wouldn’t be surprised if schools (esp UGA and USC) intentionally scheduled these weekends on the same dates to force students to choose. On another thread from last year regarding Top Scholars somebody posted that it’s really disappointing when students who get Top Scholars go elsewhere because there are many other qualified students who could have benefitted from the scholarships.

When South Carolina sends out the invites of a student declines to attend the weekend (and therefore declines receiving a TS) they send out additional invitations. But after the weekend they aren’t able to have another weekend/interviews so the scholarships are not used.

@Hummingbird56 Who knows what the numbers are like this year, but I happen to have three current Honors College students (my D, her roommate and her BF— all 4th years) at my house now, so I asked. All three were accepted to Honors in December (but note, this was 2014) and none received Top Scholar invites. The two girls are OOS, good but not tippy top stats. The boy is a SC resident, was NMF. At least one of his roommates was a December SCHC admit who also was not invited to Top Scholars weekend.

So anecdotally, there are probably quite a few December SCHC admits who are a good fit for the Honors College and thus get an early notification, but who aren’t Top Scholar candidates.

Thank you @LuckyCharms913. That really helps temper expectations. Trying not to get hopes up.

This may sound silly, but does anyone know if the Honors College reception on the Friday night prior to Accepted Student Day has a limited capacity? My daughter has not RSVP’d because we really cannot afford to travel and stay overnight twice. We are humble, but hopeful for a Top Scholar invite for March. In reading previous posts, they have arrived the week of January 18th, which is the week before the first reception. I’m wondering if we could wait until then to RSVP? We just don’t have the money to go twice. Honestly, we can’t afford for her to attend OOS if she is not a TS anyway. So I guess it’s a moot point. We are beyond grateful for the merit already awarded, but cannot consider USC without additional help. Thanks in advance for any insight you may have.

@GAmom3372 I believe space is limited but I don’t think there’s any harm to RSVP yes and cancel if you decide not to go. But definitely let them know if you are cancelling in case someone else wants the spot.

@GAmom3372 I appreciate your openness and you are certainly not alone in deciding how to best spend your time and resources in the upcoming months. You should RSVP but I heard there is a wait list for the January date (Friday evening event) now. They may still have spots open for the Saturday event.
