Top schools in Maryland

Well, we all know Hopkins, but what are some other good, presitigous, schools in maryland should i attempt to apply to. Would college park be a considered a presitigious school,ie, among the ivy's and public?

im from maryland and if you want to do engineering, computer science, or science i know it is one of the better public schools (very good at CS). its no uva, ucb, ucla, etc. but if your instate its a very good choice. if your out of state, it is a pretty good school to look at. (i cant comment about the humanities stuff, im into science)

yea UMD is a good school not as prestigious as the ivies but i'd put it as one of the (or close to) the top 10 most prestigious public schools

just remember prestige shouldn't be a HUGE factor in your decision if you visit UMD-CP and like it you should go there...

UMD- Baltimore County has a good reputation for the sciences i've heard and A LOT of companies recruit from there (a lot more companies recruit at baltimore campus than at the "prestigious" college park campus)

you could look into St. Mary's College of Maryland... it's one of the few public liberal arts colleges i believe so if you want a small school, check that out.

lots of people (especially catholics) love Loyola. it has a good rep and it's not too tough to get into...

then there is hood college and goucher college which are worth looking into if you want a liberal arts college in maryland... i remember goucher was listed as "a college that changes lives" it was some list i forget what it was called...

yup so in summary check out: John Hopkins, UMD - CP, UMD - BC

and for liberal arts colleges check out St. Mary's, Hood, and Goucher

What is your intended major? I know UMD-CP is very strong in egineering. For undergrad engineering, it was ranked 22nd by US News overall same as UCLA and Duke. Undergrad is 10th in aerospace. For PhD in electrical, it was ranked 13th by US News.

Why does it have to be Maryland? Maryland is a tiny state; even if you want to be close to home, you could still venture in PA, NJ, NY, DE, DC, VA...

The MOST prestigious school in Maryland is the United States Naval Academy

1 President of the United States
2 Cabinet Members
6 Ambassadors
19 Members of Congress
5 State Governors
5 Secretaries of the Navy
1 Secretary of the Air Force
4 Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
4 Vice Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
26 Chiefs of Naval Operations
9 Commandants of the Marine Corps
2 Nobel Prize Awardees
73 Medal of Honor Awardees
52 Astronauts
43 Rhodes Scholars
15 Marshall Scholars
93 Olmsted Scholars
25 Fitzgerald Scholars
830 Burke Scholars
2 Heisman Trophy Winners
1 NBA Rookie of the Year and MVP
1 Zaphod

End of debate.

no, i am majoring in economics, it has a decent econ program. one of your emeratus professory, thomas schelling, recieved the noble prize in economics. is UM-CP a good econ school?

yeah i was about to say the naval academy is very prestigious.

UMCP is pretty good at business, engineering, computer science, and journalism. I feel UMCP isn't as good in the sciences as it is in these other majors. They are good at astronomy. I live in MD and always here good things about science at UMBC.

oh yea how did i forget about the USNA.. great school not many people have all the stuff that they are looking for though... honestly i think the service academies are the toughest schools to get into...

You posted right before I did. For econ alexandre posted this up a few months ago. I trust his opinion. He posted the schools into groups rather than a list

He listed JHU as the best econ program in MD and listed UMCP in the next grouping which would put it somewhere from 20-25 in the nation according to him. If you are considering business also, UMCP is your best bet in MD.

that list is incorrect, and i am a hundred percent. Hopkins does not outrank marylands economic program. medical yes, economic no. here is the actual list.

But how many undergrads are affected by “research output”?

Besides identifying some schools with generally respected economics departments, I would agree with kk and think the ranking order of both those lists are meaningless as far as undergrad experience and what you can go on and do from there. abemart's list is actually specifically for graduate school anyway. Anyone non in-state choosing UIowa and UMinnesota over Princeton, Duke, Brown, Georgetown based on the supposed rankings of econ departments is doing themselves a dis-service.

<--- Flattered beyond belief. :o

Thanks. :)

ETA: I should point out that USNA offers a BS in Economics. My roomate got one, in fact. You just have to wait a bit after graduation before putting it to use. ;)

If you mean quality, then in Maryland you have these options;

St. Mary's College of Maryland (not Mt. Saint Marys). Liberal Arts

Hood College. Very small. Strong Biology Dept. Joint programs with Duke University.

Towson University. Strong public rival of U of M. Nicer campus than U of M.

Salisbury University. Rising public college located on the Eastern Shore. Not as many assets as UM or Towson. Chesapeake Bay related studies (Ecology/Environmental Policy) are good.

U of M-Baltimore County. Widely admired science (particularly graduate) departments.

No one has mentioned St. John's College yet. It has always struck me as an interesting and challenging program.

Naval Academy aside, Maryland's best schools I'd order as (this is really hard and up for debate):

Johns Hopkins
University of Maryland - College Park
St. Marys College of Maryland
University of Maryland - Baltimore
Townson
Morgan State/Bowie State

As far as LAC and small colleges go:

St. Marys College of Maryland

Loyola College of Maryland

St. John's

Hood/Goucher/Washington College on same level

College of Notre Dame of Maryland

Naah...got to disagree with you Cre8tive1. Washington and Notre Dame aren't same level as the other LACs. Also, Morgan State would fall behind, ranking far below Salisbury University in competitiveness.

LakeWash, I don't see much of anything seperating Washington and Goucher, and it would be hard for you to make an arguement for Hood, so I put them on the same level.

And do you mean about Notre Dame, I put it last? How much further could you go but bottom, LOL

And about Salisbury, I'm sorry I forgot about that one, but it's pretty easy to overlook. Aside from UM:CP, UM:BC, Townson, and the Honors College, I didn't factor in any others beside the HBCUs b/c those are the one out-of-staters pay the most (if any) attention too.

Morgan State is one of the more prominent HBCUs, noting why it has more out-of-state students than the three main Maryland campuses.
