Top schools in New York/Long Island for Sciences

What are the top schools for sciences in the Long Island metropolitan area? Please exclude ivy's. Also they must be transfer friendly and not SUPER competitive, the level of selectivity must not exceed that of NYU. Thank you.

In no order, these are schools in metro area you might want to look into.

Fordham University/Iona College/Adelphi U/Hofstra U/Pace U

These are colleges in NYC/Westchester/Long Island. Sorry I cannot recommend more or tell you specifics about the science department. Most of these however are far less selective then NYU and relatively transfer-friendly.

JHU...it's kinda close.

Hopkins? Not close at all. I have also heard JHU is not too transfer friendly.

Im not strict on the location, I just want a list of schools that are notably good in sciences in the NE...but preferably near Long Island/NY area. How is Stony Brook in the sciences? (biochemistry). More schools would be great. Oh yea and by top schools I mean Tier 1-2, excluding the top 20 and/or super competitive schools. Thanks.

You should take a glance at the University of Rochester.

Stony brook is primarilly good at sciences. It's basically all they're known for. I don't know about transfers, but it's also a little bit below tier 2 (depending on your definition). If you insist on long island, it might be as good as you will get.

No, I don't insist on only Long Island, right now I am open to ideas in the NE but it has to be good in the sciences.

I know this goes against the eleatism of this board, but I seriouslly believe that if you go to a good "B" college or better, most science majors are so standardized that you will be getting the same basic undergraduate degree. ie- chem 1 and 2 are chem 1 and 2 at SUNY plattsburg or NYU. If you are really interested in science as a career or grad school option, get research experience early and often. This will set you apart more than school names. That being said, several SUNYs have great science departments and are a real bargain! Good luck.

SUNY stony brook is known for its sciences, check them out

Would you consider Rutgers?

Stony Brook is great for sciences. It has affilitations with Brookhaven National Labs and Cold Spring Harbor Labs. It has an excellent reputation for sciences (esp Biology & Physics)

With that said, this reputation is mainly applicable to the Graduate level for Stony Brook That is, as an UG you probably will not have much interaction with Professors, until you are an upperclassman. BIO and Chem 101 may have over a hundred students with several lab sections that will be each handled by a TA. You will have to deal with all the issues related to Pre-med students in your classes.

Let me know if want to know more.

What do you mean by, "all the issues related to pre-med students"?

And how is Rutgers, (NB) im assuming, compared to Stony Brook for science?

Colgate, RPI, URochester are all good in the sciences. I don't know if they are all too selective for you or not. Stony Brook also is considered strong in the sciences.

2007 USNWR rankings:

Top National Universities

Rutgers: 60
Stony Brook: 98

Top Public Universities

Rutgers: 21
Stony Brook: 46

More meaningful would be a comparison at a particular major level. Which major/dept/science are you focusing on? These university level assessments may not give you an accurate picture of each schools science rankings.

Pre-med students need to take certain science classes such as Chemistry to fulfill certain requirements to apply medical school. These strudents are driven to get an "A". This motivation may lead to certain behaviors not considered to be friendly or conducive to learning. I can spell this out further with specfic examples if you still do not understand what I am referring to.
