Top Schools that give a lot of money?

But I suspect they will be comfortable paying 15k/4years. I think the max they will pay is 25k/4years, and* the rest will be left up to me***

First of all, for pre-med, you should borrow as little as possible, since med school requires large loans.

Secondly, YOU can’t borrow much. YOU can only borrow the following amounts…

Frosh 5500
soph 6500
jr 7500
sr 7500

So, if a school expects your family to pay $35k and your parents will only pay $15k, then that will be a problem. Also…many schools will ALREADY include a student loan towards your “need,” so you won’t be able to take out a student loan to go towards that EFC.

If you don’t LOVE UPitt, then you need another financial safety.

Wharton… don’t bank your chance. It’s about as competitive as Harvard. Stern NYU is not known for generosity. And, if you’re serious about premed, why would you want to go a top tier school with tons of debt? Think about this – You get to med school, you’re a med student. You graduate from med school, you’re a doctor. If you graduate top class from med school, chances are you can go to some pretty high paying or fancy specialty. If you don’t, you won’t. That’s true for Eastern Virginia and that’s true for Harvard. It’s not like a physician from Eastern Virginia is a half-dr and a Havard doc is a full one!

This is so true. Go to a “good school,” get tippy top grades and LORs, and with a strong MCAT get into med school…all with little to no undergrad debt. Med school is expensive enough.

My son snagged nearly a free ride at his flagship. He has a 4.0 GPA, he takes the MCAT in a couple of months, and he’ll be applying to med schools this summer. He’s been able to excel at his school, get some awesome research opps, did a fab REU over the summer, and will graduate with no debt at all.

If money is an issue just attend the flagship university or college within your state…in NY our top students choose Geneseo (LAC) or Binghamton (University). Both are also recognized as best value colleges for instate and OOS students.
