<p>This is because Brown’s engineering department is ABET certified. This means there is a set standardized curriculum that they cannot really diverge from that much. Most majors at Brown require 10-12 courses, but engineering majors typically require closer to 20-24. Brown engineers have to complete the same “core” curriculum of all other ABET certified engineering programs, so it’s true that engineers at Brown don’t really get much more freedom than engineers in your average college.</p>

<p>The path for other majors though is a lot more flexible. They just have to complete ~10 courses in a major and then are given free reign for the other ~22 courses they take</p>
