I am a junior and intend on applying to several top notch universities. I want to major in accounting but a lot of the schools I wanted to apply to don’t even offer it! I’m unsure if there is already a thread for this, but could someone compile a list of some of the best universities that offer accounting as an undergraduate major?
What are your stats? You can complie your own list by going to each school’s website and searching programs.
I don’t want to get this into a chance thread or anything but I have a 3.96 unweighted gpa while taking a rigorous course load as well as a 2330 sat an have several leadership positions in ec’s. I already checked several schools listings and was bummed that schools like MIT don’t have accounting unless I’m mistaken. I was trying to see if there any good but kind of under the radar schools that offer accounting.
Top schools are not under the radar by definition. Indiana University is very well regarded in accounting. Also Northeastern University and Boston University.
Thank you! I guess I kind of misspoke, I wanted to know about schools like the ones you listed or about a top school like an ivy that may have had an accounting major that I was unaware of.
jvapor12 our DS3 is a high school junior looking at accounting programs. I can share his current list with you. You could consider these for fresh ideas. The most important requirements for him are a 5 year masters in accounting option and a high CPA exam pass rate. Then his priorities shift to more personal factors.
UT
University of GA
Clemson
IU
SMU
USC
Wake Forest
https://www.cob.unt.edu/acct/2014%20PAR%20Rankings.pdf PAR puts out a list every year. Top schools on this list always seem to include: Notre Dame, BYU, Texas, UI, USC & Michigan.
If you’re looking at Ivy League, then Penn would seem like a great choice.
Also, consider regional bias. If you know you want to work in Chicago, Notre Dame or UI might be a better choice than UT or USC.
When I worked Big 4 (Big 6 back then) in LA, I remember the firm targeting grads from ND, BYU & USC. They got paid a little more in starting salary. But people were hired in from all sorts of schools.
I believe that bright students with good grades can have a successful accounting career from most any school. Good luck with your search.
There are plenty of lists…offhand UPenn (Wharton), Cornell (Dyson), NYU (Stern), Notre Dame (Mendoza). Many big state schools are strong in accounting such as UMichigan, UIndiana, UTexas, UIUC, UIndiana, UNC, UVa, William and Mary, Ohio State. Some other ideas are Boston College, USC, Villanova, Lehigh. Really any top business school will have a very solid accounting program…

Take a look at UIUC! Not an Ivy, but it has a wonderful accounting program.
Oops…I should have included this link:

That PAR report is odd…seems to be missing schools like Wharton, Cornell where virtually all the accounting majors are gobbled up and includes some schools traditionally not well ranked which are not heavily recruited at by the top firms all – makes no sense at all. Just goes to show that no ranking (including the one I posted) should be fully trusted.
I live in Pennsylvania so penn seems like the obvious choice but I know how difficult it is to get into Wharton! I like the idea of boston college as I would like to live and work in Boston however.
Look into Bentley univ good business school outside of boston have good rankings acct and finance
