Top Small Private Colleges In California

I second IsleBoy's list

were i dead set on a private in california given these stats i would recommend santa clara in the north and chapman or pepperdine in the south. any of the claremont colleges remain a bit out of reach unless the test scores improve. you would get a fine education at these three and with good grades be in the hunt for a selective grad school experience.

yah.. 1550/2400
this last test im sure i got at least 1800..
i got 1550 the beginning of my junior year..
and ive prepared alot for this test, im sure i got at least 1800 or above..

I realize that I don’t have the best grades in the world, considering most schools average about 3.5 and I have about 3.0 – 3.2 Although I am taking the hardest class offered at my school, I am still trying my best and do tend to struggle here and there. As I said before I am trying to get into the best possible undergrad business school in California, that is not to far out of my reach. I do believe with the EC and Community Service, work experience, and the sports I have committed to over the past 4 years will help me. I am looking for a good private college where I can get the most out of my education, where there are small classes and taught by professors, unlike the UC undergrad system. So far, my list consists of theses schools:

Cal States:
Sonoma
Chico
Long Beach
Fullerton
Sacramento
San Marcos
San Luis Obispo

UC:
Davis
Merced
Santa Cruz

Private:
USF
Cal Lutheran
Whittier
Woodbury
Pt.Loma Nazarene
Santa Clara
Chapman
La Verne
Redlands
Pepperdine
Occidental
St. Mary’s College

If you have any suggestion, please let me know.

if you're only looking at privates then drop the cal states and UCs and focus. small intimate classes are not the trademark of either. from your list of privates above apply to USF, santa clara, chapman, and pepperdine and you will get at least one or two admit letters from very fine business programs. i might add oxy based on the overall quality of your educational experience and forget the rest.

thank you

I don't understand.
People view UCLA and Claremont Colleges (CMC, Harvey Mudd) at same level, yet many people here thinks USC is one step below them...

and in other board, most ppl say that UCLA and USC are VERY identical (difference is neglible).

My personal opinion:

Stanford, Cal Tech, Pomona

Harvey Mudd, Claremont McKenna, USC

Santa Clara, Pepperdine, Occidental, Scripps, Pitzer, Loyola Marymount

waht other boarders are you talking about? so i can get some more opinions.

Here's a pretty good ranking list of top California Private Schools:

Cal Tech

Stanford

USC

Pepperdine

USD

Santa Clara

USF

LMU

Chapman

Redlands/St. Mary's/Pacific

LAC's

Pomona

Claremont

Harvey Mudd

Scripps

Occidental

Pitzer

Thomas Aquinas

Mills

Oh, but to answer your question, this is what you're looking at in terms of your chance to get in:

REACH:
Pepperdine
USD
Santa Clara

MATCH:
USF
LMU
St. Mary's
Pacific
Redlands

SAFETY:
Whittier
Dominican
Menlo

Good luck man.

is Pepperdine and USD and Santa Clara, really a reach for me?

Those are 3 tough schools to get into... especially if ya only have a 3.1 and 1550 SAT. They're worth a shot.... but I wouldn't bank on getting into any of them.

i got 1550 beginning of junior year and i just re-took the SAT's hopefully getting atleast 1800...
im banking on my EC's and the fact that ive been on the varsity rowing team for 3 years which shows alot of dedication and commitment if you know anything about the sport.. and also im gonna bank on me being a Native American

anymore advice?

Sounds like you're also banking on the admissions officers knowing about varsity rowing. Let us know what you got on the SATs.

I'd tier it more this way but this is just my opinion...

Stanford, Caltech

Harvey Mudd, Pomona

CMC, USC

Occidental, Scripps

Pitzer, Pepperdine

Pepperdine has gotten more competitive, USD would be easier then Pepperdine to get into.
