Top Southern Schools

I think that Vandy win would be a bit more impressive if Tennessee was actually good this year.

UT was preranked #3 in the nation, they just couldn't put the pieces together...

Yea, but Vandy wasn't preranked and went on a 4-0 start including beating Wake Forest and Arkansas....

Rice. The students are, on average, some of the most intelligent in the nation as well as the South. They don't call it "Harvard of the South" for nothing.

How about Clemson?

By the way, very interesting article in NY times about this (Southern schools)

which issue?

I already said that I don't consider Rice a southern school. Texas isn't "southern"- it is Texas.

Texas is, and always has been, southern. Particularly east of I-35, east Texas has far more in common with the deep south than it does with the west.

The Texas schools that are most frequently discussed on these boards do not meet MY criteria for "southern schools". Rice and UT do not have the southern feeling that Furman and UVA have.

Actually, yeah, it pretty much is for nothing. Emory, Duke, Rice, and others have all been called that by someone at some point, it's really a kind of useless comparison.

wow I can't stand like any of the colleges mentioned. I want something that's a challenge.

And you don't believe Duke (#5 in the nation) or my top choice Vanderbilt (#18 in the nation) will be a challenge?

-Alex

Any other opinions?

rebel: I think you should intern in a foreign country.....................Not challenging...................sheesh!

vandy is overrated.

untilted, you get rejected? list reasons to back up your opinion...

Vandy is my #1 and i hope I can get in.

Is Vanderbilt for rich people only? Not that I'm really interested, I'd never go to a place full of southern bigots. Do I hear dueling banjos in the background?

dwincho -- as a current Vanderbilt student from New York I have never been more offended by a CC post. Similiar to schools like Duke and Emory, Vanderbilt has incredible geographic diversity (less than 50% reside in the south). I have friends from all over the country as my suitemates are from California, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, and Massachusetts, and I'm from Long Island. I have found the student body to be very down-to-earth and outgoing. The campus is gorgeous, professors are great, D1 Sports, lots of events (ie. Commodore Quake, Rites of Spring, etc). I could go on forever because I'm in love with Vandy. Feel free to PM me, but if your looking for bigots or banjos you are definitely in the wrong place.

Vanderbilt:

didn't i see you in the news clips shouting down Ann Coulter at UConn?

I thought so.

"untilted, you get rejected? list reasons to back up your opinion...

Vandy is my #1 and i hope I can get in."

i didnt even apply. lol.

honestly, you think vandy is better than Georgetown? i think not. you think vandy is better than UC-berkeley/michigan/UVa? i think not.
just my opinion.

I respect Vandy..............i just dont think it should be where it is on ranking. im sorry, it's just my honest opinion.

based on... what...? we could tell that your opinion is that Vanderbilt doesn't belong where it is on the rankings. Saying "well these schools below it are better than it because... well that's just my opinion" doesn't really answer anything.

Do you even know anything about Vanderbilt?

Texas just cannot be defined as "southern." There are many rural parts of Texas, yes, but they feel more "Texan" than they feel "southern." Texas does not have a lot in common with the quaint and beautiful North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, etc. If you are from these places you WILL be shocked at the lack of trees in Texas.

Yet, a couple schools in Texas may encompass that "southern" feel, most notably SMU, TCU, and Baylor. Stay away from Texas publics - you will be eaten alive by Texans.
