Top State U's Funding--a good year

After some tough years most state universities enjoyed increases in funding from the state excluding tuition income. The following is a list of the fairly commonly regarded Top 11 state U's and their funding for 2007-08 from the state. In order by funding gain over 2007-07 year. In Millions

Texas Austin--$353.9 Up 11.9%

UNC-CH----$284.7 Up 11%

UW-Madison-----$461.7 Up 8.8%

UCSD---------$379.8 Up 7.6%

UCBerk--------$474.3 Up 6.3%

U Illinois UC----$392.6 Up 5.6%

UCLA--------$591.0 Up 4.8%

U Illinois UC----$392.6 Up 5.6%

U Wash Seattle-----$351.8 Up 3.1%

U Mich AA------$323.4 Up 1%

William & Mary-----$44.5 Down 1.3%

UVa--------$144.2 Down 2.2%

As far as next year, the outlook for California is negative with a huge budget gap. Flat funding is probably the best they can hope for
Same for Michigan. The rest wil probably enjoy modest increases to flat funding as the economy cools in most states. Texas and Washington may do better due to stronger state economies right now.

^ Are all these money be spent for university's overhead costs? And I pressume that's apart from tuition fees generated by the public university, earnings from endowment and research grant payments of tie-up private firms?

If that's the case, then top public universities budget per student might just be on the level of a top private school... can you make a comparison of budget / student between a top private and atop public?

wow... where did the Cal schools get the extra funds this year??

I'm not sure about UT-Austin... despite the booming economy, Texas remains a populist state, and there's always the 'it's unfair to give UT more' attitude in the legislature to deal with, despite significant research showing massive return on investment from top research universities.

Well, in truth the Cal schools may never see all that money. I'd expect a mid-year cut or holdback by the Gov.
