Florida bought their student body through Bright Futures. They aren’t highly ranked in anything.

So at this time, I would like to hear what Public University is more prestigious than UC Berkeley.

Why is Rutgers University (NJ) getting continuously ignored here? Top pharmacy school, philosophy etc.?

That is arguable. Although the University of Cambridge is public, its constituent entities, the individual colleges which form the backbone of the university are fully independent foundations just like US private colleges. Same with Oxford.

cardfan, the correlation between SAT scores and graduation rates (student success) is about .8 which is very high.

I think the posters in this thread have differing opinions about what constitutes prestige. I think prestige is determined primarily by the quality of the students. Student quality has the biggest impact on undergraduate experience. Faculty quality (publications) can add to prestige in a different way but I don’t think faculty publications should be as important to prospective students as the selectivity of the college although large numbers of publications can indicate research opportunities for undergrads.

I think it is important to focus on SATs and separate that component of overall prestige.

Dang, this really means a lot to you huh? :)

overall berkeley would definitely be up there

Berkeley has no graduate health professions to speak of. No medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or nursing. Michigan is very strong in all of these areas, easily top ten. Also a top music program, information science, social work, public health, public policy, etc…

Berkeley is definitely the top public school, but Michigan is a very strong second.

Collegehelp, if you “focus” on SATs in the private sector then Caltech is Tier 1 with a big gap between Caltech and HYP. This would most definitely be the case if you are focused on the math section of SATs as others have proposed. As long as you are consistent and agree Caltech is a substantially more prestigious school with better “quality” students than Harvard, Princeton, and Yale, you make a point for one to consider.

I don’t think proponents of HYP will agree with your proposition.

Ditto with rjkofnovi’s #152 post.

For instance, my master’s programs are ranked higher than Berkeley. ;)

You did miss one. Texas.

Oxford. Cambridge.

UNC and UVA are interchangeable in both rank and prestige. UNC is a far tougher admit for OOS students than UVA since they only are allowed to enroll 18% OOS by state law. OOS admission stats rival or surpass many Ivies.

I used to be a proponent of the PA scores, and I still support a measure of academic quality/reputation in concept, but after some of the recent gaming was exposed, I find myself questioning it more. I’m also sympathetic to the argument that it tends to be self-propogating and may lag reality. In the case of UT-Austin in particular, it has consistently had a PA score of 4.0-4.1 since USNWR rankings came out, yet fell to 3.9 for the first time this year. So what could have changed to cause this? Good question! If anything, UT is financially stronger than almost every other public and continues to invest in new faculty and facilities. Certainly nothing negative has happened to support a lower score than historical average. In terms of measures like faculty quality, resources, and academic breadth/depth, schools like UVA and UNC have NO business having higher PA scores than schools like Wisconsin or Texas. Seems like a lot of schools have had similar downward PA score “creep” that may be due to to some of the gaming by other institutions.

A reputation score is important… I just don’t know how to effectively (and honestly!) gauge it.

Looking at the big picture (figure of speech) I would say:
- University of California- Berkeley
- University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill
- University of California- Los Angeles
- University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign
- University of Virgnia- Charlottesville
- University of Iowa- Iowa City
- University of Wisconsin- Madison
- University of Maryland- College Park
- Ohio State University- Columbus
- University of Washington, Pennslyvania State University, University of Florida, Rutgers

It’s really tough to rank top ten public universities since we have such a great selection of schools in our country. After rank ten I would say many that follow after would be a few of the Big Ten schools.

Close, but Texas wasn’t on the statistics list
