I think that Stanford, MIT, UMich, Caltech are top tier.

<p>Dont forget to add Berkeley to the list (its consistently rated top 3 along with Stanford and MIT). I wouldnt say its 'necessary' to attend such a school, as long as you're good enough at what you do and have the work/experience to prove it. Caltech is more known for its hard sciences, while Cornell is the best out of the ivies for engineering (but not as good as Berkeley/Stanford/MIT).</p>
