Top Truly Full Ride College for National Merit Finalists

I know Kentucky and Alabama offer close to full rides (referring here to free tuition and free room and board for all four years) in varying degrees.

But what is the top truly full ride (no additional costs except for books, fees etc) college or university for a NMF even if not ranked as highly as Alabama or Kentucky?

I realize the game can change in the Fall so I am referring to current information.

I believe UNM covers all costs.

Arizona State, Univ of Ariz, & Oklahoma offer a similar pkg as Bama & Kentucky.

There is a thread for this pinned to the top of the forum I believe…you might have to read it backwards to get the latest info, but take a look at the first post first.

Erin’sDad- Would you consider that the best of the full ride scholarships for NMFs? Don’t know much about that school-I did visit the website though.

GMTplus&- Thanks-I did look at Oklahoma. I’m looking at worst case scenario where I would need to send my son for financial reasons (other than local community college) so trying to find even better offers financially for decent schools.

Do you qualify for a Pell Grant? And what is your son’s likely major

Thanks all. Been on the forum for a while and I have been to Bob’s yolasite- problem is that most listed as full ride are not actually full ride as I defined it in my original post- meaning free tuition and free room and board-when you go to many of those sites they are missing a component.

mom2collegekids- S is looking at poly sci or history currently. We don’t quality for Pell. Problem is that his sister is a year behind him so we have 3 years of paying for both and she is not at scholarship level. She can always go to community college but we want her to be able to experience dorm life also so we’re trying to figure out how we’ll be able to juggle both in college at the same time so having a full ride for S could make a big difference.

BTW- Bob- no offense intended- some sites may have changed and the devil is in the details- I really appreciate the work you’ve done for CC!!!

It also depends on whether you are looking for scholarships that are automatic for NM status, or competitive scholarships where NM status is a minimum eligibility criterion.

I can’t find any details on Texas Tech’s scholarship because it is new, but they say it covers full COA- including everything you mentioned- AND books. That would leave personal expenses for you.

I know of at least two true full guaranteed full rides for Nmf. University of alabama-Huntsville and university of Houston. Both are tuition fees housing meal plan and I think even a book stipend

ucbalumnus- I’m looking for automatic as financial safety.
gettingschooled- Thanks- I wasn’t familiar with Texas Tech- I appreciate the info.

I did look at Univ of Idaho which offers a true full ride. Looking for other options in addition.

Ole Miss and Central Florida would be my top picks for Full Ride.

Looking through the list, UT-Dallas is a few thousand away from a full-ride for NMS and pretty respected in TX in STEM fields:

UH (Houston) is a full-ride and has a well-respected writing program.

Wichita State University in Kansas offers a full ride up to 15 units per semester. That’s where I’m going.

Central Florida’s scholarship covers full COA depending on your housing choice. Orlando also is relatively easy to get to

Also if your daughter’s gpa is in scholarship range, but test score a bit too low, there is time yet to prep this summer and retake next fall.

Apply for the McNair Scholarship at University of South Carolina. It’s not guaranteed, but it is a full ride. And they will allow you to stack other scholarships like their NMS award or departmental scholarships on top of it.

Application is due by December 1 as well as admissions application.

Not a guarantee, but what is wrong with doing a few applications?

UKentucky is a FULL ride for
NMF. The Patterson is full tuition, fees, room and board and a stipend (and possibly and iPad) for all four years. Automatic once the student is named NMF and lists UK as first choice. This may not cover the most expensive meal plan or dorm–we didn’t get that far since D decided against going there.
