Hey guys, I'm looking for a good undergrad program in the US (obviously lol). I know about penn, miami, and UBC, but I was looking for other options. I don't want to go to Canada so UBC is out. Thanks :)

Nursing can be a very local market, so it may be important to choose your school based on where you want to be employed. To a certain extent, a nursing program is a nursing program because you can’t get a job until you pass the boards. Ask the programs that you look at what the first time pass rates are for their graduates.

Given that Columbia doesn’t have an undergraduate school of nursing, I’m curious as to how it manages to have more than Penn, which actually has such a school…

I was wondering the same thing. Duke doesn’t offer undergraduate nursing either.

This does not appear to be the case at all today. Nurses seem to have their choice of places and even seem to get bonuses to move to places where it’s hard to hire. School and location does not seem to much matter if you are licensed.

You are sort of correct. Columbia and Duke offer bachelors degree programs in nursing to students who already have a bachelors degree but in a different field.

It’s ridiculous that nurses are paid so little (the 100% employment doesn’t look so good when salaries are considered). I’m astonished by the low starting salaries reported by many of the nursing schools where D is applying, considering both the enormous need for nurses and the responsibilities of the job.

As a parent, I wish D would consider an easier and more lucrative career path.

As a parent, I also am very proud of D for being commited to this career.

^ Maybe, but in this economy, the prospect of a job is much more promising than some majors…

In certain parts of the country, the starting salary for BSN nurses is quite high. Add a graduate degree, and the possibilities are endless…

Re post #9.

Obviously location and experience make a difference.

According to salary.com :

"The typical starting salary for entry-level RNs is $44,600, says Joe Kilmartin, director of compensation for Salary.com. Compare this to average starting salaries for new graduates in:

Accounting - $43.269
Marketing - $33,873
Economics - $24,667
Teaching - $31,704
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median annual earnings of registered nurses were $52,330 in 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $43,370 and $63,360. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $37,200, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $74,760.

Salaries increase as nurses gain experience. When you consider the pay a nurse receives for working shifts and overtime, many nurses make much more than their base salaries. Nurses who go into management and advanced clinical practice can earn even more.

Clinical Nurse Specialists make about $41,226.

Nurse administrators average $45,071.

Nurse anesthetists earn about $113,000.

Nurse practitioners average $71,000. "

The University of Washington has the #1 nursing program since 1984.

^ Doesn’t USNews only rank graduate nursing programs?

We haven’t really been able to find out that much about any relative comparisons for undergraduate nursing programs.

Man, that salary survey posted above must be real old, because I’ve seen multiple surveys using recent numbers that have Econ majors starting at around 50k a year.

^ Doesn’t USNews only rank graduate nursing programs?
You are correct, US News ranks graduate nursing programs.

In my opinion to evaluate an undergraduate nursing programs you have to weigh a number of factors such as:

Nclex pass rate
Clinical hours
Direct entry vs delayed entry into the BSN program
Location and quality of hospitals for clinical hours
Lab technology
Graduate and research opportunities
Campus safety

Michigan has a top three nursing school.
