How many URM students scored more than 1400 old (2100 new) each year?
I can't find those stats at collegeboard.com.

On the old SAT it was something around 170 or so i believe for African Americans. Dont know about Hispanics/Natives.

are you serious? that number is unbelievable.

170 cant be correct........1700?

These are the only stats that I've seen. To get the whole story, you have to buy it from the Washington Post archieves, but below are the SAT stats that were quoted.

"Washington Post
Saturday, November 15, 2003

AMHERST, Mass. -- As one of only 192 blacks who scored higher than 1450 on the SAT this year, Alice Abrokwa is being wooed by some of the nation's most elite colleges. ...

The College Board provides 1,600 colleges with 64 million names a year, sorted by subcategories such as ethnic group and Zip code, said Sam McNair, director of the organization's Student Search Service. At 26 cents per name, this works out to more than $16 million in low-overhead revenue.

The competition is particularly ferocious for blacks and Hispanics with SAT scores that put them on par with the most talented white students. According to the College Board, only 1,877 black students (about 1.5 percent of blacks who take the tests) scored higher than 1300 out of a possible 1600 on the SAT in 2003. Only 72 scored higher than 1500.

Among the overall student population, 148,024 (about 10 percent of test takers) scored higher than 1300, and 13,897 earned scores higher than 1500."

What about Hispanics like Puerto Ricans? I am applying EA to Harvard and I noticed that abhout 34 Puerto Ricans were enrolled at Harvard out of about 2000 applicants accepted. How many Puerto Ricans applicants do you think apply EA to Harvard or score a 30 or higher on the ACT? I wonder if only 100 Puerto Ricans apply early?

The college board used to have posted the SAT breakdown for racial groups. This was for the 2003 test. For Puerto Ricans, the 99th percentile v or m was a 700. A 650 was the 96th percentile. 14,569 Puerto Ricans took the test.

By comparison, for males of all races, a 700v was the 95th percentile, a 700 m was the 91st percentile. For females of all races, a 700 v, m was the 96th percentile.

Unfortunately, the CB no longer posts that info. The only reason that I have it is that I had saved it.

Please don't ask about other ethnic groups because I don't have time to look them up.

Garrrr...if only 21 days was enough time for me to get over a 1400...then i'd be gold :D

i hope im one of those few who score above 1500 on the SAT this year :P seriously though it would be cool (and kinda sad) to know that your one of the only ones

BTW-Cele if you get the blue book and do some good studying, that should be plenty of time

where theres a will theres a way

I hope I can break a 30 ACT....(sigh)

What do you think constitutes as a URM?

Just type the story into google and click on the "Cached" version:

bobisbob:

URM = African American, Hispanic and Native American
ORM = Asian

as a black student myself, i was veryyyy shocked at those stats...
but i guess maybe im just not familiar with what goes on in america..ive never dont live there. 72 above 1500 seriously looks terrible...
and if the report is talking about the entire year..then wouldn't that number be a cumulative over several SATs...thats even worse..

It's not THAT bad. I mean, there are plenty of black students who have 4.0 gpa's, ranked in top 5% of their class, and have nice EC's. It's just that when it comes to SAT's those black students don't do as well as students of other races who have comparable GPA's/academic potential and EC's.

BTW, I based that whole thing on anecdotal evidence (but lots of it).

I wish that were true, but when it comes to black males, there are not many who meet those kind of standards. For instance, the graduation rate for African American males in the United States was 41% in 2001-2002, compared with 70% for white students.

Wait, there's still hope yet! My anecdotal evidence is based mostly on female blacks. I'm sure that they do better than males.

edit Hmmm, forget I just said that. I dunno what I was thinking. I, of all people, should know better than to use anecdotal evidence to generalize about an entire population. D'oh!

Yeah, it's pretty bad, and it's not getting any better any time soon.

I know the average math score for asains is about 580, compared to 510 for whites

That is irrelevant, habdragon88, because asians are not URMs.

Yeah, asians are ORM's.
