<p>@Deedy-
I guess its a great profile from a US college perspective and all but there are a few things that I would like to point out-
If the ‘nerdy Indians are wierd dumbasses’ attitude manages to slip into your essays or something then its NOT gonna help you. For all you know, the reader’s best friend might be.
T.I.M.E. for PCM? LOL
I’m proud to be what you’d call the ‘nerdy Indian’ and assure you McMillan has no no recognition whatsoever even in the geek community. And you can take my word for it, that nearly none of the REAL guys will ever compete against you in it. If you really want to show your potential, give the Government Olympiads. They ALONE are the recognized and standardized olympiads. Check out hbcse, iarcs, isi for NSEs, RMO, ZIO, etc. And make SURE that you appear for KVPY next session. After the International Olympiads and IRIS through the Government, KVPY is the next biggest academic qualification followed by NTSE and the rest of the olympiads even when it comes to admission to say, MIT.
Colleges don’t look for the average social life of an American teen. ANY American teen will give that to them. They’re looking for what you bring to the college, and as an international your culture and passions. 300 movies is not what I’d call a ‘life’. I’d call it a bad taste of movies (no offense)
City level science contests are not nearly
So go out and do what you love, you seem to have the stats and credentials, make the best of YOUR life, live it YOUR way instead of trying to match up to an average American teen standards and get into whichever college you feel is right for YOU, and not the rankings.
Goodluck</p>
<p>LOL Point 5 appears to be cut out for some reason-
5. City level science contests are not even remotely selective. If you have a decent invention or something, PM me and I’ll tell you the exact pathways to get recognition from it through CSIR etc.
Bottomline for all competitions-
Internationally known AND recognized>Government>private national ones like NTSE, NSO>local International ones like silverzone, CMS etc.>local city stuff, which is hardly app worthy for someone who can manage 25 on FTRE(Irrespective of its significance in US admissions, that is one thing the geek community always recognizes )
Edit: Maybe sometime in March-April, all the 2014ers should get down to post a consolidated Indian college walk-through covering different kinds of extremes and applicant profiles :P</p>
<p>I’m in, as the one Humanities representative around. :p</p>
<p>OH BTW AMHERST GRAD. Too bad you seem to be gone. :(</p>
<p>Nitpicking, but 300 movies is not bad taste in movies. I have about five thousand books, you wouldn’t call that bad taste in books would you.</p>
<p>Deedy, the social life should have one impact only: to make you an interesting person, and to have that come across in your essays. Otherwise, * it doesn’t matter for college * unless you founded an organization or did something extra with it, your interests - had an international movie organization thingy, for example. Lol I don’t know, meghna would know more about that area than me.</p>
<p>I agree about the extremes-streams thing, tetris!</p>
<p>“am totally up to date with the latest”
In that context, it sounds more like a case of bad taste. If you really have an original perspective on movies and a seasoned critic or whatever, go do something of the sort Quasi suggested.
And LOL Indian streams ARE extreme!</p>
<p>Tetris is GOD. So don’t talk about her <_<
But still, I was pointing towards how streams are forced upon students in the Indian system. Humanities, especially in places like Lucknow is entirely a self motivated effort. You know very well that physics is not the only thing that keeps me going :P</p>
<p>I guess that going for Humanities is not the easiest decision in the world. It’s kind of sad that a choice like what academic direction to go in loads you with the kind of baggage it does here.</p>
<p>Psych as a subject is not something I agree with, philosophically. It’s interesting-ish and fun to freak people out with, but physics is a better subject.</p>
<p>And I’d kill to give the CBSE sciences instead of the ISCs. Even if I’m allowed to switch NOW!
Also, why are you worried about the 10th marks? You’ve done GREAT!</p>
<p>Stop slamming me…
I could use some encouragement
Firstly, regarding music and movies… i do have a profound knowledge of everything up and coming, but the 300 movies are my favorite… the classics… you know… the bridge on the river kwai, the good the bad the ugly… the maltese falcon… so if you dont like the classics, well you’re the one with the bad taste… no offence… and music… yes, i admit… some songs i get are extremely ****ty but i could use my knowledge in music in my essay or something… cause you give me a song, and i can criticize it from all angles… and i listen to all genres
and thank you QuasiProfound for defending my movie taste…</p>
<p>And no offence again,… i know ya’ll might be from the geek community or whatever, but i think that’s a good way to project myself as a person - the not-so-pedantic genius.</p>
<p>okay… now down to the main stuff
hard to explain to colleges, but just for gary7’s info… in fiitjee, where i come a consistent 2nd in class, there are 3 people who quilified RMO, 5 who’ve done NTSE, 5 KVPY scholars, and 3 of the city’s ICSE toppers… but colleges aren’t listening to that, are they?
give me a realitic take on the colleges i’m looking for: cornell, berkeley, MIT, carnegie mellon, cooper union, caltech, georgia tech.
what do you mean “TIME for PCM?”…
4.this sounds wannabe too… but i couldve qualified for ZIO this time, and RMO… had i known earlier… i took a look at the papers… i solved as much as a guy who qualified…but that doesnt count either
does not applying to Financial aid to MIT help?
i know a guy, passed out from our school this batch… got into harvard, princeton and yale with full schol last year… all because of 1 national science project which he built with someone else (someone else built it for him)…
besides drilling me for not being some sort of supergenius, can you, gary7 (who happens to be the one with the useful advice), at leadt encourage me for the number of stuff i CAN do…
My dad did his MBA from Cornell… postal course though.,. does that help?
i know i might be getting too hyper… but check out my blog… deedydash.blogspot.com. I really DO write well… that’s gotta count for something…</p>
<p>Uff… sorry for bugging all of you on a thread that’s not mine… thanks for the feedback…</p>
