Okay, so how do we determine how well a mainstream undergraduate institution performs relative to another? The absolute number of winners? The percentage of those who apply and are selected?

The LACs don’t get any love.

I can’t believe Berkeley ranks so low on this area given that a lot of Berkeley students would really want to pursue grad studies… But then again, facts are facts.

Hat’s off to Northwestern University for producing the most number of Fulbright Scholars. Who would have thought that they would have the most number of winners this year even beating giant schools like Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley and Yale. :)

Hat’s off also to George Washington (23 winners), Boston College (21 winners), and most specially to, Arizona State for having 18 winners this year even beating Princeton, Berkeley and UPenn, which are all BIG NAMES in the academic world!!

of course, based on the percentage of those who apply and are selected. that shouldn’t be even asked…

^ I don’t think it’s such a bad question. The absolute numbers in many cases are so small, I don’t see how there can be a good basis for performance comparison. Does Oberlin’s 10/24 v. Weleyan’s 3/23 really say much about the relative strengths of these two rather similar schools? I don’t think so.

The number of apps relative to student body size may be a good indicator of serious interest in academics, but the students who apply are not necessarily a school’s very strongest students in every case.

Actually there is an error of sorts. Fordham University actually had a 14th offered, but he declined for other professional reasons. They had 13 offered and accepted Fulbright Scholarships. But 14 offered.

( I don’t know if other schools had students offered who also declined, or not.)

Last year Michigan was way in front, and Berkeley was #5 (behind UM, H, Y, and NU, respectively).

The numbers are far too small for a single year to be significant. Why everyone is going gaga over the numbers is beyond me. I’m also not sure why people insist on posting the full lists and clogging up the thread when I linked to the lists in post #5.

You can’t. To be blunt, Fulbrights are not equal. It’s considerably more impressive for a school to send 4 to the UK than 5 to the Czech Republic.

You also have no way of separating out the undergraduate winners from the graduate winners, so the list is effectively useless except as an item of curiosity.

“Last year Michigan was way in front, and Berkeley was #5 (behind UM, H, Y, and NU, respectively).”

Michigan is usually at/near the top of Fulbrights year in and year out.

My post was intended to provide additional insight by sorting the data you provided in various ways, if any additional insight can actually be assessed from this particular metric.

noimagination, my post was not particularly aimed at you and was perhaps overly vexated. Although I think nothing good comes of mixing LACs and universities, for the reasons I mentioned above, your post was intended to be helpful data analysis.

In the future, however, this code might be advisable:

{code}blahblahblahblah{/code}

Replace the {} with , and it compacts a long post into a smaller one with a scrolling option.

Go Cats!!!

No problem. I mixed the two categories purely out of interest to see what the results would be.

I've used code tags on other forums... I didn't know they were enabled here! Thanks for the tip.

Go Northwestern! Congrats to Michigan :)

I wonder how they actually get the numbers–they must be early numbers from Fulbright. DD is a current Fulbrighter from Swarthmore—this list says 10–but that does not include graduates, as Swarthmore itself lists 13 winners including graduates on their website. D has met a 14th Swattie in her Fulbright country–another grad student who has not been credited on Swarthmore’s website. So I take everything in these rankings with a grain of salt!
