I was just wondering if picking your own topic on the Common App is seen as a strike against your application. My topic, btw, is about how I struggled to learn how to draw decently by myself, to show my dedication, perservance, and eagerness to learn. I just feel like I don't want to change the essay drastically just to fit one of the other essay topics because right now, it's really strong. But does it look bad that I chose my own topic?

Thanks!

I don’t think so. I’m choosing my own topic too

My college counselor said that the “topic of your choice” section is fine as long as you have clear direction to your essay, which it looks like you do.

I’m doing “topic of your choice” for mine, mostly because it covers more than one of the regular prompts.

I’m also doing a topic of my choice. I think it shows the most creativity, which colleges like to see!

As long as it’s not a bogus topic.
