Is it really okay to do this? Or, would it be looked at as a negative point that you didn't use one of the pre-written prompts?

All the information I’ve heard seems to say that the topic of your choice is preferred to the pre-written prompts.

While I think that colleges are 100% okay with the “topic of your choice,” I would be cautious about circling that that is, in fact, what you have written. Often it seems, the “topic of your choice” could easily fall into one of the prewritten questions (at least on the Common App). But please keep in mind that this is just my own humble opinion I mean, I have just as much experience with this as you do!!

Good luck!!

thanks for the replies! i’m pretty sure it doesn’t fit into any of the common app questions - it’s kind of like “glimpses into the life of…”. so it’s doesn’t really bundle into one of the prompts.

sounds more creative than using one of the prompts. don’t be afraid to use it if it really shows who you are :)
