I am a senior applying to attend college in Fall 2011. I am currently working on the Common Application and I chose the topic-"Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you." The topic I chose is abortion, one I feel very strongely about and feel I can write about well. However, my parents are worried that the topic may be to controversial for a College Application, especially since my view is very conservitive and I am applying to many liberal schools ( I plan on majoring in Musical Theatre.) Should I change my essay? I don't want schools to turn me away because they don't agree with my opinion...

Any feedback would be VERY helpful!

p.s. If anyone is willing to read my essay and give me a few pointers, I would appreciate it a lot!! PM me

I heard to avoid controversial issues like abortion.
Besides, what would your abortion view tell about YOU? Nothing much really… other than your political standpoint and personal morals.

Have you had an abortion? Were you nearly aborted? How is it relevant to your life?

The idea is to take an issue that REALLY hits home and write about it, but you don’t wanna get TOO risky, just a little bit. I’ll read it if you want.

If you feel passionately about it, then I think you should do it. No “liberal” school will turn you down because they disagree with you. They really don’t care so much what you think. What they care about is how you think. If you can mount a cogent, well-reasoned essay against abortion, then go for it.
