Someone I know keeps a list of conversational topics with him, and he refers to this list when he feels a topic has been thoroughly discussed for the time being. I decided to follow his example because I tend to have better conversations using this approach. Usually, the transition between topics is made seamless, so that's not an issue.

I'm interested in discussing topics outside of my comfort zone and topics that don't normally interest me, so any suggestions, no matter how bizarre, will do. If you have a current events topic in mind (and they have been thoroughly discussed), please suggest different angles in which to approach it. As you brainstorm, I'll come up with ideas of my own.

From the responses, I will select those to put on my list of conversation-starters and the rest on the list of topics I must learn more about before forming a well-thought out opinion.

um sex is always fun to talk about. whether it be about how uptight america is about it unlike other countries, or whether it be about how promiscuity is viewed even when all precautions are taken (condom, testing...), how to help prevent the spread of std's and hiv, premarital sex. i dunno, anything about sex, that's somewhat sophisticated and intellectual. don't make it a discussion about positions and disgusting stories, although they are entertaining to joke about with friends. but for sake of conversation, it gets a little old.

So.. like.. your friend pops out a little card when he's thoroughly finished discussing a topic? Doesn't the other person get a bit weirded out?

Well anyway, I talk about anything that comes to mind but I like talking about hot celebs, people gossip, tv shows, concerts, the teacher hating talk, "school feels like prison", gay marriages, gay adoption, aliens and their plans, ignorant religions, body parts, i dunno anything.

Yesterday I was talking to my friend about how weird humans look compared to other animals.. Like most other animals are covered in heaps of hair.. humans have a small patch of hair on the top and hair underneath the part joining our arm and our body and hair between the legs.. And our toes are weird too - like they practically are flippery.. strange. We made a conclusion that humans are UGLY

Favorite foods, traditions & holidays & how they differ in different places, platonic friendships, best vacation spots & why, earliest memories, nature of intelligence: genetic vs. acquired, sports, most unusual friendship, how to cure global poverty, good ideas for "make a difference day," good appointment for US Supreme Court, are all some thoughts.

anyone else feel that they have a story that's (to you) worth repeating, and find that they're repeating it TOO much? My friends often have to remind me that I've told them the same story 10 times, while others that I assume know the story don't know it at all when I refer to it in passing. Kinda confusing.

To NoFX- Yes, he pulls out of his pocket a list of topics. Our circle of friends is used to his formal speaking style, so no one is weirded out.

please, do not talk about videagames. To someone who doesn't play videa games, a description of a really fun game you played is possibly the most boring thing one could ever imagine. I'd say the same goes for an interesting or entertaining book/movie/TV show... you would never do it justice by repeating it, and it can only bore the people you're talking to.

Sex is an interesitng thing to discuss, and even things that are very broad, like your goals in life, what you most dislike about yourself, etc.
