topics for UC prompts?

For the first UC prompt (tell us about the world you live in) I was going to write about the theatre community at my school, and how joining theatre in high school has shaped my dreams to pursue theatre design in college.

For the second one (Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?) I was going to write about being a girl scout and all the leadership opportunities I've had through it.

However, I know that the personal essay is supposed to be a place to share what is not already in your application, and since theatre and girl scouts are both listed as my extracurriculars, should I do something different? I was also thinking of talking about this summer program I did at UCSD, but I hear that summer programs aren't that impressive to colleges. Thanks for all help!

“However, I know that the personal essay is supposed to be a place to share what is not already in your application, and since theatre and girl scouts are both listed as my extracurriculars, should I do something different?”

This is true, but taking one area listed on the app and exploring it in depth is acceptable. What they don’t want is lots of words wasted repeating what you’ve listed on the app. For example, if you also listed a theater award on your app, you don’t need to mention it again in the essay. If you volunteered in girls scouts and listed that in the app, don’t go in that direction. They want passion and commitment. They want you to talk about you…It’s OK to write about something in the app, but do it in a way that introduces new info and focuses on you-your commitment and character.

Good Luck.
