Trying to decide between Vassar and Haveford and i dont know what to do. if anyone has any info that could even remotely help me please let me know. I love both schools and am trying to work out some kind of tie breaker!! HELP!

It's all about the fit. It's hard to help you decide without knowing you, but Vassar environment is extremely friendly and supportive (from students to profs to administrative staff). The students are extremely talented, esp. in the arts. In terms of academics, it depends on the profs you take classes with but so far I've taken classes with profs that really challenged my assumptions about many things and completely changed my perspectives through thought-provoking class discussions. Vassar is also very liberal so you will be surprised by the diverse range of viewpoints you're gonna encounter, which again is gonna challenge your own viewpoint and is really when you learn the most.

I don't know about Haveford but i hope this helps. Come visit Vassar if you can. It's beautiful! and it's awesome!!! :)

Have you visited? I've heard Vassar is a little bit prettier than Haverford, for what it's worth. But the above poster is right when they say it's all about fit?

Vassar's beautiful, friendly, supportive, diverse, and full of opportunities--no core curriculum, and a breadth of study.

But I'm sure Haverford's pretty and offers you a diverse course selection, too. But Haverford also gives you the opportunity to take classes at Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore (I believe, I could be incorrect.) And that might be a draw for some people. Haverford also has the Honor Code, if you feel that's something that might benefit you.

Vassar's a little bit more left of Haverford, with its porn magazine and strong liberal image which, by themselves, might seem trivial and unimportant, are indicative of the progressive, individualistic type of person that Vassar is known for.

I applied early decision, so obviously I picked Vassar, but I did so for that gloriously intangible "fit" that no one on a message board can accurately define for you. Best of luck, though. Vassar and Haverford are two amazing schools. And while it's a difficult decision, it's one that few are lucky enough to make. Congratulations!

I was also choosing between those schools. Size was an important factor in making my decision. I went to a really small high school, so I value and appreciate a tight-knit community. But Haverford was just TOO small. 1,100 students, and remember that at any given time quite a few will be studying abroad... Vassar seemed like the perfect compromise for me. I think we're about 2400 - still very small, but large enough that I don't know everyone's business and can keep meeting new people every year. Another thing about Haverford was its lack of a drama department - you have to go over to Bryn Mawr to do that (kind of a pain), where it's predominately girls involved. I'm not even involved in the department itself at Vassar, but at least there are numerous opportunities for me to become involved extracurricularly, and still have access to amazing theater facilities.

And here's something that I hadn't thought of at the time, but occurred to me once I arrived at Vassar. All well and good that freshmen live together at Haverford - they bond, they hang out, etc. etc. But I LOVE the dorm situation at Vassar. Freshmen live mixed in among upperclassmen so we have the benefit of their wisdom and awesome company, but we still live grouped together in Fellow groups - pretty much identical to Haverford Customs groups. Also, if you want, you can live in that one dorm all four years - although typically seniors live in on-campus houses and apartments where they can do all their own cooking and stuff. What this means is that dorm pride and dorm unity is very big. My dorm is a really great community, we do lots of really fun events together, and it's wonderful to know that next year I'll still be a part of this community and not have to uproot every year.

But - Haverford is an amazing school, you really can't go wrong! Good luck with your decision!

I had to make the exact same decision a week ago, and ended up picking vassar mainly for its size, and many of the little things leahvs11 mentioned. I visited both, and they are both great so you really can't go wrong.

thanks so much...i have come to a similar conclusion that hav. was too small and many of the programs i would be interested in would be a bryn mawr. but now im stuck between Vassar and Mt holyoke.....
