Torn between cities

I'm extremely new on CC, and have no idea where to post this, but I'm posting it here

I'm a freshman in high school and looking at colleges pretty early, just to have an idea what to do.

I'm into film and would love to go to a film school. I'm pretty torn between two colleges and know the grades and ecs i need to get in. The decision is mostly just because of each city. The colleges are both completely different. I'm looking at RISD, or UT. Like i said, they're way, way different from the other. My brother lives in Austin, and RISD is close to home. I'm really into music, cameras, and little synths and stuff like that. I'm just wondering if anyone has personal preferences on the two, and what about them you like.

Thanks, i appreciate any kind of input

At this stage you should probably come up with a list of 15 or more schools that interest you and gradually narrow down, so you don’t need to choose between these two now. People interested in film seem to also look at NYU, Wesleyan and California schools like USC.

What can your parents afford? What are your stats? In what state do you live?

Not that you won’t change your mind from this point forward, but Providence, as you may know, is pretty close to Hartford and Boston if you want a change of scenery, whereas Austin, being in the huge state of Texas, may not be.

You may find it helpful to go to the subforums for each school and ask current students what they like about each city.

Some others to possibly check into also are Syracuse, Ithaca, Boston University and RIT.

i’ve looked at most of those schools. USC seems like a school that if I couldn’t choose between anything, I would go to. My brother went to Syracuse, and it really doesn’t seem like a place i want to be. not that the school is bad, but the city is… I guess I’m looking at a college with a city that will interest me as much as the school.

NYU i’ve researched, and that’s almost the last film school i would want to go to. if i was thinking of applying to NYU, i would just work harder to go to columbia. I’ve grown up visiting NYC on a regular basis, and I’d just like a change of pace.

I guess I’m asking too early and can decide on my own, I was just looking to see if anyone here had any experience with either school instead of suggestions to other schools. Thanks for the input though, I appreciate getting a reply haha

Both NYU and Columbia may be in NYC, but they are in different neighborhoods so the environments feel a bit different. Having visited both not too long ago, I actually prefer NYU over Columbia due to its location. Also, NYU should be better for film than Columbia despite Columbia being more prestigious overall.

Not to criticize, but you’re kind of saying two universities with the best film schools in the nation are your last few choices. The College Search and Selection section of CC is usually for college suggestions so that’s why people are bringing up other schools.

As a freshman you have no idea what you really want to do and where you really want to be. You may say that you really know what you want to do, but trust me, you don’t. Also you don’t have any stats. Come back in 2 years.

For now, enjoy high school and do what you genuinely want to do. Don’t waste away HS by being a college whore. With that said be conscious of it, and work hard, but don’t let college ruin high school.

ah! well it’s not like i’m whoring away with video to impress colleges, but film is my biggest hobby, and i can’t imagine doing anything else besides it. well, that’s not true, but i would never be able to pull off a cubicle job. i’m more of a creativity focused person, trust me, college aint ruining anything

and the whole columbia / NYC location thing, i’d say just forget that it was mentioned haha, I’m trying to focus elsewhere. I love harlem and Greenwich village, and i’ve been to both many times, it’s just I want something new and a bit farther away from home than a 30 minute train ride. like I said, i’m just looking for someone who has experience going to school in austin, providence or LA. or any other cool city that I’m forgetting (excluding new york). the only chance i would ever go to NYU is for the music technology program, which i’m not interested in at all.

I live in connecticut, so very close to new york. my parents can afford anything that is not among Franklin and Marshal or Stanford, etc… honestly, I have no idea what an unweighted or weighted GPA is yet, but i’m rocking a 3.6 for this year, taking one honors course. Next year I’ll be taking three, but that doesn’t really matter right now…

For an idea of my ECs, I’m the president of the “Film and Movie” club, a board member for a local film festival (which I won an award in for an entry that I wrote and directed), I’m on JV ski team and JV track, a sponsored skateboarder by two companies, and I also work as a freelance videographer. This week I’ll be receiving an award for my academic achievement in the field of Narrative Film and Media.

I’m only a freshman, so I don’t exactly have much to give you statistically, but there it is (if it helps!)
