Torn between Two Teacher Recs...

Hello! I am about to ask for a teacher recommendation (I only need one), and I need to decide between two teachers… Which one would be better for my application?

First choice: My English teacher. I’ve had her two years for English, in both Honors and AP, and she loves me. I also wrote her a letter saying how much I appreciated her class, even though I received a B both years I had her. Bottom line, my performance in the class wasn’t as high as it could have been, but we have a great relationship.

Second Choice: My French teacher. I’ve had him all four years, and he has commonly referred to me as his best student. He has given me multiple awards before, but our teacher-student relationship is not on the level of my English teacher because he is very dry.

Which recommendation letter would be better? Both teachers have degrees in English, so it will be well-crafted either well, but which one would better explain my prowess as a student? Thank you in advance!

What are you planning to study in college?

I’d lean towards the English teacher-- English is a core subject and it’s good to have a rec from a core subject. If she loves you then it could help reduce any potential negative impact from the Bs (i.e. show that you’re still a great student even in your less strong subjects, attest to you character better etc.). It just sounds like you know her more and she would write great things.

You can put the awards from French in the honors section of your apps so they’ll get the gist of what your French teacher would probably put in his rec. Unless your intended major is French I’d lean towards the English teacher in this case.

I agree with @Lagging - for teacher recs you really should choose the individuals who know you best, and who can be a great advocate for you.

Agree – one last thing you might want to do is ask your GC. Perhaps one might be a terrible writer – even English teachers – it happens. The GC knows the teachers’ abilities.

@Lagging @T26E4 I am planning to major in Mathematics. And my GC has already assured me that the English teacher writes fantastic recs. Thank you again for the responses!

Agree with others. Ask asap, because some very popular teachers get so many requests that they have to decline some students.
