i was admitted spring to berkeley with 2,000 scholarship (want to go into Hass school of business but they only determine that after 2 years so i am currently accepted into College of Letters and Science)

i was admitted fall to davis with 6,000 scholarship (major is Food Science which i am interested in)

i was admitted fall to UCSD with 2,000 scholarship (major is undeclared)

Berkeley is a more prestigious school than davis, but how much lower ranked is davis? is davis a respectable school and what other factors favor davis over berkeley?

As for UCSD i am not really very interested since my major (business) is not there. but UCSD is ranked above davis and has a pretty solid reputation

IMHO go to Davis and take the 6000. After completing a major in food sciences get an MBA. You will finish with less debt and have a wonderful combination of degrees.

Ranking:
16th among public universities nationwide (National Research Council)
14th among public universities nationwide (U.S. News & World Report)
12th in research funding among U.S. ranked public universities and 5th among UC campuses (National Science Foundation) 17th, just behind Harvard, in the first ranking of American universities based on their contributions to society (Washington Monthly).

Association:
One of 62 North American universities admitted into the prestigious Association of American Universities.

Research funding: $505 million in 200405

Private support: $79 million in 200405

Colleges/schools/divisions:
4 colleges (Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Letters and Science)
5 professional schools (Education, Law, Management, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine)

Student enrollment: 29,637 (fall 2005)

Alumni with degrees: 166,885

Undergraduate majors: 103

Graduate programs: 86

Intercollegiate sports: 26 (14 for women, 12 for men)

Now few corrections:
1. UC Davis official messed up on their data nad instead of telling to US News that they have 98% of proffesors with high degree, they said 64% which lowered them by 6 places.
2. UC Davis just moved to Devision 1 school in sports, and they are already in top20 public colleges, soon (2-3 years) they'll be strong
3. It's still undergrad. program,

i have the same problem...spring admit for Cal or UCD and UCSD...I am leaning towards UCSD for bio-something...I was accepted into bioengineering-premed but I may change to biology...I wish I knew where I could find out med school acceptance rates for these 3 universities....

it feels kind of weird to turn down UCB but I want to go somewhere for the full college experience, not just for the name. It is a very tough decision - as I like all 3 colleges...I did not get any aid from any of them so money isn't the issue.

Okay so heres my 2 cents. UCB obviously has a very prestigious reputation - as it should be. But that should NOT be the reason you choose UCB. It's not about the rankings or where they fall on some lists, its what you think about the schools. IMHO (in my humble opinion ;)) I find UCB and UCSD to be extremely rigid and unwelcoming. The college atmosphere is definitely there - but it is shrouded by stereotypes and peoples assumptions of themselves. I've found that the reason Davis has the reputation of being laid back and just an overall good college experience is because people don't go in with assumptions. So, if you want to try and battle against a campus where a majority of the students are looking at the small picture (this is how im ranked, this is what needs to happen for me to make X dollars a year) go to UCB or UCSD - I live rather close to both and most people here understand that both schools, while wonderful, are very rigid and sometimes unwelcoming. If you want to look at the big picture of having a good college experience, getting out with a lot less debt, and still being able to get where you want to be, check out davis.

Wow. Thanks for the info you guys! I have the same exact problem. I didnt get any aid and I got a Spring admit to BioEng at Berkeley. I got a Regents and a Grant at Davis in Biomedical Engineering and got into UCSD BioEng. I always wanted to go to Berkeley but I think that the campus and most of the people stink. I have never seen the Davis campus though but i am going to visit over the break. Thanks to everyone who commented! This really helps me out.

Why Davis over Cal? Because of all the negative aspects of the Berkeley undergraduate experience. My friends that go there are "satisfied" but not overwhelmingly happy... One senior at Haas even told me that every time he goes to Berkeley he is depressed... He said the area is "grungy." Berk may have top-tier prestigious academics, but the environment is depressing, has a high crime rate (in some parts of Berkeley), poor and expensive housing, and the cut-throat nature of the student body.

My counselor has told me how Davis has great academics and that for anundergraduate degree, the difference between Davis and Berkeley isn't really significant - it's your major that counts. Davis is a college town with happy, enthusiastic students and plenty of decent, reasonably-priced housing. It has been expanding while becoming more competitive admissions-wise, and for me personally, I just believe I fit there more than I would at Cal.

As far as UCSD goes, I just personally did not like the campus. I have a friend going there who wishes she had chosen Davis.

i would like to point out this is a davis forum, but i think this information is nevertheless valuable.

i have a cousin that commutes to berkeley and purely hates it, especially beacuse of the social environment. this year, however, she joined some clubs to help her survive there a bit. don't forget she might hate berkeley because she has commuted there since freshman year.

another cousin of mine has gone to davis with regents and was offered a transfer to ucsd. she took it right away and flew to UCSD to continue her schooling. i'm not sure what major she was in, but she is working towards being a dentist. after about one quarter she hated ucsd and ****ed her parents off to go back to davis :P. she should be graduating at uc davis this year and going to dental school.

i hope this info helps. i personally have been thinking about this a lot because my friends are in the same boat (although i got rejected from ucsd and ucb). i know i'm biased, but i think ucdavis has a lot of things ucb and ucsd lacks in environmental terms.

If you're after the reputation youre going to want to look at berkeley and UCSD. I have a family member (uncle) who was a professor at stanford and has been working at as a surgeon for many years and when I visited him in San Francisco he told me that he considers Davis on par with UCB.

My english teacher who also went to stanford told me the same exact thing when I brought it up in class last week.

All i can gather from this is Davis simply doesnt have the reputation which is a shame.

thanks for the abundance of information, however jason did point out this is a davis forum so opinions might be a little biased, right now im leaning towards davis, but i will post this same question in "college admissions forum" so that way there will be none (if any) bias.
again thank you everyone for the information

Neobonzi:
I have heard IMHO used as both honest and humble. I ascribe to the idea that the minute you think you are being humble, you are no longer humble. Therefore, I prefer to be honest; IMHO that is...:)

No, two people who are obviously part of the literati seem to have the opinion that davis is on par with UCBerkeley contrary to popular opinion of the hierchy of the UC's
