Torn with the Scandal

ljrfrm-No problem at all. I’m glad Dr. Erickson actually responded. PSU definitely seems like a great place. I can’t wait to go on my accepted students visit!

I thanked him for his response and informed him that I would be taking an accepted students tour in February. He responded again and said he wouldn’t be in town that date, but would love to meet me…This is crazy.

I like his style.

I have to agree.

If anyone wants the 2nd set of messages let me know.

Why not, I’ll take a look at them if you don’t mind.

@andyblatts: I’d love to see them too if you don’t mind- my daughter was accepted and it is definitely one of her top choices!

@andyblatts: If you don’t mind sharing, I would really like to read them as well. Thanks!

Hope everyone who wanted the emails got them. Happy New Year to all and if anyone wants them let me know.

If anyone who wants to, or plans on attending PSU, you’re free to add me on Facebook. PM me if so.

Hi andybatts. Been out of the country and just catching up - may I see the Dr. Erickson emails? Thanks. I responded earlier in this thread - my daughter is a sophomore and my other daughter was just accepted for the summer and will be attending. Honestly, the experience that we’ve had with Penn State has been incredible. I am not finding it hard to believe that Dr. Erickson wrote back to you because my girls both had communications with the Executive Director of Admissions who responded to every single email they wrote. Whatever you choose - you have all great choices - best of luck!

Thanks andybatts for sending.

No problem. Hope you liked it.

It’s been a while since anyone’s posted in this thread- how’s everyone feeling now?

I’ve wanted to transfer to PSU since December of 2010. I’ve had to wait a year to apply to U.P because of their regulations regarding transfer students. In that time, I’ve been able to really gather reasons as to why I love the school (the academic rigor, school spirit and countless educational and social opportunities, partying NOT being one of them for me personally) and can’t wait to transfer. The recent events concerning Penn State haven’t changed my opinion about Penn State–look at the numerous other schools that followed afterwards with accusations of sexual harassment! Obviously this kind of thing happens elsewhere; Penn State is great, but that doesn’t mean all of its people are–just like anywhere else. Regardless, people tend to focus completely on the bad parts and totally forget about all the great things about Penn State–which won’t change in response to the recent events. If anything, I bet PSU has increased its efforts to improve their educational and sports departments, as well as the school overall.
I am eagerly awaiting a decision regarding my acceptance/decline to Penn State.

To be honest, in 4-5 years from now do you really think that a job interviewer will look at your resume and say “hm penn state…a place where a coach raped little boys…you decided to go there anyways…that shows you don’t care about children and rape…your obviously a bad person and don’t deserve this job”

This is ridiculous. EVERY school has had scandals. Does anyone remember the university of Miami had a big scandal with the football players that was splashed all over the news until this penn state scandal emerged. UM was damn happy that penn states scandal overshadowed theirs.

Once a new story comes out, penn state will be old news. It’s disgusting to think how much influence media has over our youth. We don’t even know about half of the scandals that may go on in Harvard or Yale and we don’t care unless they are exposed.

You will get a great education either way and NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE will have the scandal in their mind when they read that you spent your undergrad at penn state.

We are over it already and sticking with what’s important in the end… a good education …environment my S enjoys… and ultimate connections for a job. The administration is going to be real careful in the coming years. Still dont know if S will choose PSU but the scandal wont be the reason if he doesn’t. Safety is also an issue for me and my peace of mind while S is away and State College is a nice safe college town (unfortunately some horrific adults allowed a crime to happen on campus grounds) but as far as his safety… Im not worried.

Mango, I completely agree, excellent points. Penn State was my first choice for a while before the scandal, and although the scandal did put doubt in my mind for a few weeks, I am now realizing that it shouldn’t be a major factor/deal breaker. I’m pretty certain that I am going to attend in the Fall.

Just when publicity was starting to die down, Paterno has given an interview which is bound to stir up the controversy again among Paterno supporters vs. detractors.
I agree with Mango, and pamom I think that will definitely be news for awhile. Let’s see how it plays out.
