Tough CR Question

This is from an old psat reading passage. Its the word meaning in context question and here is the part of the passage the question refers to.

Griffin suggests that animal communication is a window on the conscious minds of animals that "it seems likely that animals often experience something similar to the message they communicate." But if the messages are not messages at all, and if indeed that are unconscious products of natural selection, then Griffin's argument is cast in a very different light.

"cast" most nearl means

A. discarded
B. presented
C. molded
D. directed
e. assigned

Answers:

Its B. I got the question right but I had a tough time chosing between presented and directed. So there must be something wrong with directed but I cant seem to figure it out. Why is presented better than directed?

What do people mean when they say that something “casts a shadow”

^to eject or maybe present direct

I suck at these kinds of questions lol

You don’t really “direct” an argument.

Casts a shadow=creates, makes.

Casts=presents=seen

Griffins argument is “cast” in a different light.

“Different light” can be interpreted as meaning in a different view-point from the common view.

Directed kind of resembles the word “director” who is someone that orders others to comply with his directions. Are you forcing the the argument in a different light?

No. It makes more sense for the argument to be introduced (presented) from a different view point.

Kind of makes sense? Or are you more confused? Haha

^ haha that was my thought process when I selected present. But, I thuoght of directed as being directed in this direction, a different view point.

I think what it means is that by casting, it means “showing”, such as in a shadow, which would make B correct because presenting something is closest to showing something.

why doesn’t “molded” work?

^Molding implies change. The argument is not changed, but rather a different side to the argument is brought out. Presentation is the most appropriate here.
