Now I know similar topics have come up about this but mine has a little bit of a twist that I could not find duplicated in the other threads. I am about to be separated from the Navy because of downsizing (despite what people may think the economy hurts the military too). I figure after the end of my contract I should put to use the education benefits granted to me. So quick background: I have 5 years avionics experience both with electrical and electronics on helicopters and working on circuit boards repairing components. I've done about a year worth of college maybe a little more (mostly general ed but some trig as well as AC/DC theory and logic circuits).

Thing is I kinda have a knack for computers and fixing them. I've grown up around them fixing them. Worked part time at a hotel fixing network issues. Never really went into too much IT stuff though just basic network maintenance and troubleshooting before I got in the Navy.

So my decision comes in here. I was considering a BSIT or similar like IS. I was however doing some research into it and it looks like without a good 3-5 years experience I would be without a job or starting at some ridiculous low wage at a call center (which I understand how life works and how I have to start at the bottom).

Now would it better suit me if I went BSEE which has also been in the back of my mind for awhile? Since I have a strong understanding of it would it help any? All the math courses I went through to become an avionics tech is what made me consider doing IT. I kinda dislike math sometimes even though I'm very good at it. I don't necessarily hate it it just seems tedious to me occasionally although I do feel accomplished after figuring out a formula or completing a problem set.

My other question is having 5 years experience in Avionics going to help me when I do try to look around for an EE job? I figure no experience in IT starting out would be hard to land a job vs 5 years in an electrical/electronics job? Thanks in advance for any help.
