So long story short, I am deciding between Cornell Arts and Sciences and Rutger SASHP with a full ride. I am a prospective math major and am wondering if Cornell is worth the 200000 price tag. I am also concerned with the individual attention and research opportunities available and the differences between both schools. I know both are research unis, but how similar is Cornell vs. the Rutgers Honors Program, specifically for mathematics (and possibly physics) as a UNDERGRAD. If I do well, I am hoping to move on the graduate school... How will my choice affect grad school admissions as well (Particularly to top school)? Anyway, Im just looking for any insight, as I know this is a very loaded situation.

200,000 k is not worth the debt from any school, Rutgers is a research heavy school. Do well in Rutgers, so when you move on to grad school you will have no debt.
Grad school is expensive as is… As long as you get an awesome GPA, which will be tough to do, at both schools.

I heard that grad school PHD programs are free with stipend in the maths and sciences though…

What does your heart tell you? Do you not mind giving up a “free ride”?

I can understand why it is such a dilemma, but I really think you should go with your instinct. Do your parents mind paying 200,000 for your undergraduate studies?

Personally, if I were in your shoes, I would take advantage of the free ride. And if a grad school PHD program does offer free rides as well with stipends, then you basically are able to go to college for free =)

Yeah, and as for undergrad, schools do not really mind so much about where you went for undergraduate studies, as long as you did well and have top grades. Rutgers is pretty well-known though for it’s math and sciences programs, especially with research. So while it’s not an ivy league like Cornell, it is still quite respectable. And to go there for free to boot? That’s pretty awesome!

You have to make a decision that you will be happy with. My son accepted the Presidential scholarship and is very excited and looking forward to attending. He also joined the Honors program. I recommend attending the Honors Scholars day if you haven’t already - you get to speak to a lot of faculty and students. It really swayed my son towards Rutgers.

da bump, da bump

Have you visited Cornell?

yea i visited and liked it, but idk how close the honors program is to an “ivy league” education…but RU and CU math grad rankings are similar, so im hoping their nearly identical

Cornell is good, but is not worth the 200,000 undergrad debt unless you’re quite wealthy. Do well at Rutgers and save your money for a grad school, which is what most employers look at anyway. If money isn’t an issue, cornell is better.
