tough decision

I moved to canada from texas about 5 years ago and i've had my heart set on being a longhorn all my life. i've been accepted to the university of georgia, university of florida and the UT Cap program...i don't know what to do. Does anyone happen to know anything about the cap program? Doesn't everyone get accepted to it? I don't know what to do because UT austin is my dream school but florida and georgia are good schools too. what do you guys think?

my understanding is that you only need to maintain a 3.2 gpa at a UT system school right? if thats the case...a 3.2 is not hard to maintain/make. for instance, at UT Dallas, their gpa thing is set up where a ~97 = 4.0, ~90 = 3.6, etc. (something like that, whereas at UT, a 90 = 4.0, an 80 = 3.0, etc). so in that case, it shouldnt be too hard to maintain a 3.2 at lets say, UTD. and if you do an easy major, say a humanities major or in psychology, it shouldnt be a problem. on the other hand, your major of choice might be at one of these UT system schools and you might just end up staying there anyways (the UT system schools are generally not that bad). in the end, i hope you figure things out. best of luck.

do you know if every texas resident that gets rejected from ut is offered cap?

umm, im not sure, but i would venture a guess and say yes, because we are state residents, and pay state taxes. so they would probably have a preference over instate students.

and fyi, its not too late to apply to these UT system schools. most of them have deadlines by 7/1. and also, they give hefty scholarships.

alright thanks for the helpp...well i'll definitely consider doing the cap program but it's a pretty tough decision.

Well, I'd be deciding between UF and UGA right now if it were me. Both quality.

hey i was offered the CAP too... really is a tough decision... i've wanted to go to UT ever since i moved to texas....n having to wait one more year is just frustrating. i'm very confused about what to do. the other schools in the UT system r just not as good...
let me know where you'll be going

My son has 2 high school friends who were admitted to UT-San Antonio last Fall (I think under the CAP program) who will be transferring to Austin next Fall. He has another friend who entered summer school at UT-Austin immediately after graduating from high school and earned good enough grades that he was allowed to enroll last Fall as a full-time student.

Not every in-state student is offered CAP - plenty of them are rejected.

btw....not all UT system school offer CAP program....i know that UT-Dallas does not....and sadly, that is the only one i would be willing to attend

Go to UF, that one's a no brainer.

UT-Austin is a good school, too. If it truly is your dream school, then why have second thoughts? Besides, it's a lot cheaper in-state, if that's an issue. As for CAP... I have no idea what that is.

Actually every in state kid is offered CAPS program. In state kids can not to be rejected. I asked the admissions lady. Basically, the lazy kids who get accepted to CAPS, probably will stay lazy through the caps program, and will not get accepted into UT anyways

baklava - You don't have a clue. Seriously. At my d's school, some of the best and brightest who are ranked 11-15% were capped. Some only got in via summer school. They are hardly "lazy". Several are National Merit Commended, others have won academic awards. MOST are in the second decile because they chose to take AP classes even though they get no additional gpa weighting for those classes .....the exact antithesis of "lazy".

Seriously, quit embarrassing yourself.

You should also consider what you want to major in and where you want to live once you graduate. If you want Petroleum Engineering, for example, its probably best to stick to Texas. If you want to live in Texas after graduation, again waiting for Texas may be the best choice. For other majors or other after graduation possibilities the other schools may be appropriate. I've graduated from Texas and Berkeley, so I would lean toward Florida, just because its different.

baklava... you are definately an IDIOT

a lot of my friends got CAP'd, even some National Merit Commended students, who are in my IB classes (BC calc, physics II, etc...)
they are far from lazy, they just chose to take a rigorous courseload and it really isnt their fault that classes here are freaking hard, and they just wanted to be well prepared for college. DO NOT call them lazy for this

Maybe baklava meant that the segment of the CAPed students who really are lazy will go to UTSA thinking they have a prayer and revert to old bad habits. But if he's making a blanket statement that everyone who got CAPed is lazy, then he doesn't have a clue.

Whoa whoa whoa guys Relax. For starters, LDMOM , you make yourself look like an idiot for even roaming these boards. Don't you have something better to do then interfering with your kids lives by bugging them constantly about their future? I hate parents like you. Secondly If you read my post again, I never said that CAPPED kids were lazy. I said that the program is designed, so that the ones that are LAZY will stay lazy and therefore not make it into UT while not flat our rejecting them. I realize that good kids do get capped, NOT MOST, but A LOT of the time, its their own fault for applying late. Depending on how late you apply makes a significant difference in whether or not you get capped or summer schooled

Baklava -

You make unfounded assumptions about people's actions and intentions as evidenced by your posts.

If the parents of CAPed kids were interfering to the extent that you assume, then they would know that it makes a difference when you apply and would have forced their lazy kids to apply earlier instead of believing that everyone who applied by the deadline would get the same consideration. Perhaps you are projecting...

I don't know about ldmom, but I am just here to gather info about which is the best party school!

I stand by my response to Baklava who knows nothing about why people are capped by the UT system.

And btw... it seems as though often times when some student posters are inappropriate and are called out, they tend to fall back on that same old 'parents go away' response. This forum is for all ages. Go to myspace.com if you want childish interaction.
